Despite ominous videos of stair-traversing and door-opening robots, machines are not poised for imminent takeover. However, automation is rapidly becoming more capable, and future careers will rely heavily on robot input. Three experts on AI, robotics, and education addressed the future of human-robot workplace relationships onstage at MIT Technology Review’s EmTech Next conference in Cambridge, Mass.,on Monday. (MIT Technology Review)

  2. Bill Gates suggest for each job taken from a human by a robot, the robot should pay taxes.

I have little doubt that AI will overtake human IQ in next 100 yrs.

Also believe that human brains will interface with silicon chips next 30 yrs.

Imagine never forgetting anything, or having the sum total of knowledge (ie, the WWW) at the edge of a mere thought. The chip running the LOGIC for you! Humans have trouble with logic, let the "chip" do it big improvement to be had.

Using the same logic shouldn't we be taxing computers?

  5. If it takes a job, why not? Personal use doesn't take any jobs does it? He is speaking to biz use alone.

I can see it now... government needs more tax money... incentivize robot deployment. Combined with digital money (for everyone) they will control the economy perfectly!

Rainbows and unicorns for everyone, forever!!

  7. The real problem is that in a hundred yrs or so AI will be doing almost everything, and better than the human. What are humans going to do? How will they spend their time, make a living?

Now robots take the mundane jobs, what happens when they get smarter than the doctors they serve now? Smarter than ALL the high level professions??

This is a real problem, called progress. Like when the combine put thousands upon thousnads out of work in the fields.

That would be AWESOME!!! Humans won't have to work anymore but would enjoy all the wealth, play all day, travel all day, read, finally have time to enjoy and appreciate fine arts like ballet, theatre and opera, exercise and procreate!!! The rich is already like that today, they have a whole household of staff doing everything for them and go out with a whole entourage that takes care of everything so they don't lift a finger for anything and do you hear them complaining? No, they have absolutely no problem with it and neither would we when we reach that point. In the future, EVERYBODY would be able to be like the super-rich people today except all the people doing all the work would be replaced by robots.

  10. The rich have money already, by definition. Where will you get YOUR money, MY money get rich if there are no jobs no careers all taken by AI? Where is the economy no one has any money to buy?

No, quite a dystopian society made up of the very poor (99%), and the very rich (1%) living off and burning off (because they no one is buying their goods) their money.
