They are a leading driver of lower income consumer spending. The subprime mess has effected all mortgages and when middle to lower income people with stable jobs see the rate reset cause their payments to go way up they necessarily have to curtail other spending to make those payments. The fact that Walmart's CEO is openly disappointed with performance and sees pressure on profits does not portend well for the overall spending outlook.
