http://www.suntimes.com/output/business/cst-fin-vix05.html This is the original article I read that cause me to start this thread and post the cboe link at the top of the thread. It interviews the CEO of the CBOE and why they are doing this and also Robert Whaley the man that created the VIX index for the CBOE in the first place. My personal interest is in the CBOE new coming futures exchange and the series of contracts that will be traded on it. Opportunities abound in every market and I'm sure enterprising arb'er will figure out some uses for the contracts. Enjoy the article. Bsulli
Comment from article. Seems like Goldman has every intention of making this a viable class of tradable futures contracts. "Sandy Rattray, head of U.S. equity-derivative strategy at Goldman Sachs, one of the firms that approached the CBOE with suggestions to improve the VIX and make it tradable." http://abcnews.go.com/wire/Business/ap20030906_743.html Good luck and Good trading. hi there, this may be a bit off topic, but since vix is a measure of volitility i was wondering how one could buy calls on spx volititility right now? instead of waiting for the vix product. vol is super low right now and i want to go long it... anyone have any ideas how? i'm a newbie with options so any help would be appreciated. thanks
I would prefer the thread to stay on topic please. There is an options forum dedicated to the options and options on spx. Do a search on the spx options and you will find a great deal that has already been written on the subject that should be what your looking for. A word to the wise, if your a newbie to options, there are safer options to trade than those on the spx. Thank you for understanding.
Interesting article where the author took data back to 1990 and calcuated both version of the Vix's an documented the results. http://cbs.marketwatch.com/news/story.asp?guid={F264EF01-F45F-4470-9E38-FC963CF0B2D5}&siteid=mktw The new vix for my intraday trading is now a useful tool on intraday vix charts where as before didn't find it useful intraday. Good luck and good trading. Bsulli
As of today the only info is: VIX Futures and Options Contract Specifications: : To Be Determined. The proposed VIX futures and options have a contract size of $500. Launch Date. Trading for VIX futures and options is planned to begin in the 4th quarter of 2003 (subject to regulatory approval) Good white paper on the Vix from the history through the math to percentages. I kinda skipped over the calcuation pages, other than that it is a worth while read for after hours. http://www.cboe.com/micro/vix/VIX_QRG.pdf 1.5meg so allow time for it to download. Reading some additional materials it does appear that the new futures exchange at the cboe is going to be all electronic only. Bsulli
additional update on the new versus old Vix and how to read it. http://cbs.marketwatch.com/news/story.asp?guid={B4600687-E7EE-48D6-BC24-12FBB2078B90}&siteid=mktw Personally I found it interesting in light of all the discussions going on among traders about the current level of the Vix. fwiw Bsulli
Finally some real info for a change instead of this 4th quarter stuff. Also of importances is the Clearing functions for the futures contract has now been settled and agreed upon. http://chicagobusiness.com/cgi-bin/news.pl?id=10585 Enjoy the article. I did. Good luck and good trading. Bsulli
