I am thinking of upping my RAM to 8GB. With the price of RAM these days, it is not a big expense.

I don't have any program that can use more than 2GB... but with more RAM, that means I have have more programs opened and more things cached.

  2. Tums,
You can only go up to 3.2GB RAM in a x86 (32-bit) system whether Vista or XP. The size limitation is absolute because the kernal is only 3.2GB - that's what I have been told by Microsoft techs & Dell techs.

64-bit systems are limited to 12GB.

Not sure what system you are running but if you have a 32-bit system I'd only put 4GB in there knowing that 3.2 is max.

  4. did not know that - how much RAM will a 64-bit system go up to?

Also - is it true that 32 bit systems are limited to 3.2GB RAM?

  5. Adding another to the consideration.

Windows 7 Beta 1 x64 is better than Vista x64. Vista 1.1 is on its way and the beta has become my main OS (my backup is xpsp3).

    I have Vista 64 bit.
The OS can address more than 4GB.

(a 32 bit program is still a 32 bit program, even when it is running under a 64 bit OS)
