Verizon FIOS and Interactive Brokers TWS

  1. Yes, XP does automatically switch over. I tested just by unplugging the ethernet cable. I also did have to use the remote power controller once to get the DSL working again.

  2. One problem with FIOS that kept me from getting their television package-- it won't work with Tivo.

  3. A coworker called his cable company to say he was cancelling and going to FIOS, even though he had no intention of going to FIOS. Result: the cable company knocked around 25% off his bill. Still over $100/month, though.

I have found that rates for cable TV and ISP are HIGHLY negotiable. If you're considering cable ISP, have a look at broadbandoffers.com.

Apparently bargains are not a one-time thing either. When your latest deal runs out, just call them and ask what deals they are running at that time, and insist on getting that.

Just ran across this thread, I've had FIOS 15/2 service for over a year and it is by far the best internet connection I have ever had.

    Some corrections/answers:

    (1) You do not have to use their router. Any router that support DHCP WAN address assignment (ie: all of them) will work. If you have problems and want tech support they may make you put their router back in before they will troubleshoot a problem though (because they cant be responsible for your screwed up router config)

    (2) When power fails with FIOS you will lose your internet service in about 5 minutes - the battery backup is designed to give you phone service for about 4 hours. If you want to keep your internet service up during a power failure then you must plug the FIOS power supply into your own UPS so it doesnt realize the power has failed.

    (3) The customer is responsible for replacing the FIOS battery backup unit battery when its gets too old. It is a very common UPS-type battery and can be bought at retailers or online

    (4) Port 80 is blocked inbound for non-business FIOS customers. All other ports are opened inbound. According to the TOS you not support to host any servers anyway (but no one has gotten busted as far as I know). I am not aware of any ports blocked outbound. Bottom-line, if you want to host a web server (port 80=http) then you have to do it on another port.

    (5) There is no reason why FIOS wouldnt work with a dual-wan router any different then any other ISP connection.

    (6) FIOS TV does work with Tivo - not sure what you are talking about max401. They offer cablecards but you will be subject to the limitations of the current cablecards (not 2-way, do not support VOD) http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,17620641

you also must provide power to ONT box(which is typically outside of your house) and look like this-

I can't tell if you are agreeing with me or not since you quoted me and then said "also".

There is only one FIOS power supply and yes, it is attached to both the battery backup unit and the ONT.

That is the one and only power supply that you must put on UPS if you don't want the ONT switching to "voice-only" mode during a power-failure.
