I would also argue that immigrants (people that take risk to leave their home) are more akin to early American settlers/explorers, and being structurally more open than other countries has allowed the US to maintain a more robust start-up/small business culture than others. It's not a matter of capability; it's a matter of necessity. Immigration is just NOT necessary, for America today. It is not the solution and certainly not the only solution to resolve any so-called crisis in negative population growth. The same $$ we spent on immigration, we could've spent it on improving education on American-born citizens and developing robotics and we would've achieved the same or better results. We have to improve education and develop robotics and automation anyway regardless of whether we want immigration or not, now we just have more pressing reasons to do so, to curb the current drop in birth rates. So why not just concentrate on improving education and developing robotics and automation instead of taking away resources to spend on immigration as well? An expert in one is always superior to a jack of all trades. I am a trader and in trading, past performances is never an indication of future performances. It is true in trading and it certainly applies in social history in terms of immigration as well. So studying history is a fruitless exercise here. How much money are we spending on immigration? Immigration is natural and should be seen as a resource if your country is lucky enough to get it, as opposed to brain drain. It's a great way to deal with slowing population growth because the costs are low -- it's not like we are paying the average immigrant to travel here and settle.
One cent spent on unnecessary endeavours is one cent too much. Immigration is unnecessary regardless of whether it's natural or not.
If you think it's an honour for USA to get this resource of immigration then we don't mind not getting it. We are more than happy to let other countries like China or India to get this resource. Both China and India are also experiencing drops in birth rates in recent years; they can have all the immigration they want. We will let other countries to be lucky this time. LOL We will be content to be unlucky like Japan and South Korea and Europe before the migrants crisis to thrive with no immigration.

This doesn't make sense. We're not spending money on immigration, people are coming to the US out of their own volition. We want immigrants and prefer to have them, and would also like all of the talented and open-minded people from China and India (and everywhere else) settle here as it's a much better place and they will have a chance to apply their skills for good use.
When I mean spending, it's not just outlay cost, it includes soft cost, intangible cost and opportunity cost as well. And besides I don't know why you are insisting on cost as the reason. I already told you, immigration is NOT unnecessary. We don't want it!! We can achieve the same results without immigration. Unwanted immigration is invasion.
