  2. I ordered something from Home Shopping Network. It's been a while so I tracked the package. It was shipped by UPS and then UPS delivered it to the local USPS. It says it will be here in a day or two. So apparently, that is the cheapest way to do it.

Shipping and handling to Indiana was $5.80 for a 1 qt enamel cast iron little bean pot. That's the size I need to cook about a day or two supply of beans.

I just moved into a new apartment and now instead of those big mailboxes we had in the country I have one of those little square boxes you use a key to open. If it wasn't for the junk mail I could leave for a month no problem. Now I need to check it every three days or the poor mailman can't cram another grocery newspaper into it. The good thing is there is a dumpster between my front door and the mailbox so none of it enters my house.

Man, Capital One really wants me to open a credit card account with them bad. I should work out a deal with them, "If you don't send me any mail for a year I will open an account if you rebate me what you would have spent on postage."

well gotta go, the mailman just knocked on my door, it was just delivered to the local post office at 10 am this morning and it got here at 12:18 pm, not bad

  9. USPS could eliminate all their financial problems if they just raised the price of stamps to at least $1. The prices are way way too low for stamps. If you look at stamp prices from the 1860s to 1930s they paid 2 to 3 cents per stamp. Priced in gold at todays prices and thats the equivalent of $1.65 to $2.47 per stamp. Back then the USPS was profitable. Today its not.

But of course if USPS did raise prices, then companies like Amazon would get hit pretty hard, especially the used booksellers who all ship through media mail from USPS.

...had any. It has a PAEA mandate problem:

    "The Role of Congress

Of related significance is the Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act of 2006 (PAEA), which obligates the USPS to prefund 75-years worth of future health care benefit payments to retirees within a ten-year time span — a requirement to which no other government organization is subject. Thus, in addition to the weak economy and the diversion of mail to electronic means, the mandates of PAEA have had a considerable impact on Postal Service finances. As a consequence, it has been charged that the US Postal Service budget crisis of 2011 is, in essence, an artificial one."

In short, the USPS would be profitable without the PAEA requirement...
