Way slow... Here's a 1TB SSD with up to 1.4GB/sec read/write and sustained around 950MB/sec. And, that's one drive, no RAID0. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227517 Will only set you back $4,400.
Wanting to put the HDD back inside the laptop as a second drive. Dang... $40 for a kit to do that. A plastic sheet, 4 screws and a cable. http://www.newmodeus.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=256 Doesn't this give you a feeling that you are being ripped off? On the other hand a USB enclosure was bought for only $8.
Now that with SSD, there is no moving parts... Is it safe to carry around the laptop in the house without putting Windows to sleep/hybernate? Is it safe to slam on my laptop keyboard without risking blue screen??
New USB 3.0 product I thought I'd never see... a 3.0 on a PCI card. Lots of PCIEx1 and a few x4 cards available, but with the max bandwidth of most PCI being only 130 MB/s, never though anyone would bother to make a PCI card for 3.0. So.... if all of your PCIE slots are filled (as are mine on X38 trading rig), Newegg has a 3.0, PCI now for $50. I bought one. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...cm_re=usb_3.0_pci_card-_-15-201-041-_-Product
PCI bandwidth is less than (or close to) USB 2.0 speeds - what does this card buy you over a USB 2.0 PCI card? Edit: Never mind, I see I was confusing MB and Mb... the 3.0 card does give you double the bandwidth (USB 2.0=480Mb/s=60MB/s)... still not sure if that's worth it in terms of real-world throughput
On my X38 mobo (no USB 3.0)... USB 3.0 enclosure w/X25-M drive... mounted in USB 2.0 port.. CDM score 35/27 35/27 8/8 Same enclosure and drive mounted on new USB 3.0 PCI card... 87/64 77/64 14/22 Not screaming, but a nice improvement over USB 2.0 port. I was hoping my wireless speed would pick up with the USB 3.0 port, but no. Maybe that's because my "g" router doesn't have as much horsepower as it could. Changing to an "n" router this weekend... perhaps that will make a diff.
The USB enclosure is not working too well. Bit the bullet and bought the kid. Exactly what the package is: A plastic sheet, 4 screws and a cable. Actually there is a pair of metal mounting brackets and 4 tiny rubber things - for shock-absorption. Added back 500 GB of stoage to my laptop. Maybe I will take it off if I go on a trip.
It's funny, but of the 250GB in me laptop HD, I've only ever used no more than 40GB. Been having 210GB "going to waste" for a couple of years now...
