McCarthy did exercise his right to speak, but also used and abused his power and influence to go after the wrong people during a time when Communists did in fact infiltrate high places in government. Most of the damage came from ruined careers of Left-leaning people, some of whom played important roles in winning WWII. Yet, while he was going after Oppenheimer, other scientists in secret government labs were busy sending all the secrets to the Soviet Union. But anyone who abuses his power and influence doesnât usually last very long, and thatâs what happened to McCarthy. You Lefties should be whining âMcCarthyâ rather than Nazism, because there is a risk of it happening again in dealing with global Islamism. McCarthyism had three effects, one negative and two positive: On one hand, it ruined the careers of harmless Left-leaning people, but on the other it made it more difficult for Communism to flourish in America because Left-leaning thinkers and advocates were marginalized. Donât forget that we had a small Communist party back in the Depression era, so the risk of Communism taking root in America was real. The third effect was that it got people to realize the hysteria going on throughout the country, which allowed McCarthy to go as far as he did to abuse his power and ruin careers of people who exercised their freedom of expression and thought. To put it more precisely, itâs UN-constitutional to take away freedom, life, liberty, and property from people who send life-threatening letters to professors. They merely exercise their 1st Amendment rights. You can't throw people in jail for what they think and say, Wael. Is it bad behavior? Yes. But these professors also have the right to sue, for âemotional distressâ and so on. All this stuff has nothing to do with the Constitution. Itâs state, and regional Civil Law. Finally, if a professor gets killed, it turns into Criminal Law, and the threatening letters can be used as evidence as a motive for murder. Yes, but what I said was that punching professors in the nose and/or harming their children and/or burning their houses are illegal. These are acts of violence that invokes regional/state Criminal Law. Your problem is that you point out the faults of Western Conservatism, when you should be spending your time pointing out the faults of Islamâs Conservatives. You wonât do it because unlike McCarthy ruining the careers of the Left, the Islamists will simply kill you. That alone makes Islamâs Conservatives very different from Western Conservatives. Another way to put it: The reason why global Islamofacism grew to itâs current colossal size is that the Muslim Left spent all its time pissing on the Western Right and the American Christian Right, when it should have been spending the time fighting Osamaâs interpretation of Islam. Iâll expose my patriotic ass anytime I can. But that doesnât mean I donât feel sorry for the Brazilian man and his family. Itâs just unfortunate, and that happens in life. But his death does not go in vain. The Brits will greatly improve their abilities in defeating the Islamic fascists taking root in their country. I bet that comes with a shit-load of dingleberries!! Itâs not âmyâ Hilel foundation. And of course as usual, the Left always tries to pit Jews against all of the worldâs poor wronged by big business, capitalism, and apartheid. Now you're getting hysterical and ridiculous. Trying to equate American Conservatism with Islamofacist Jihad is tiresome, and once again shows how you Middle Eastern Lefties continue to avoid your home-grown Osama problem. As Iâve said before, both the Left and the Right can go too far, and today the Left has gone too far by teaching several generations how to not be judgmental of anything, including our enemies. ...And this is precisely why you guys continue to use schizophrenic moral equivalencies to support your arguments. You are confusing constitutional rights with good vs. bad behavior as well as hardball tactics between the Left and the Right; conservatives and liberals. Sending threatening letters to anyone is an act of bad behavior. You might think the Left throwing pies at conservative speakers is good behavior. You might think the âHey, Iâm a Palestinian Tooâ Club that follows and crashes Daniel Pipesâ lectures and disrupts his ability to be heard when the college invited him to be heard, is good behavior. But while you think that students spying on Leftist indoctrinators represents bad behavior, I think itâs great! Let everybody see what these people are teaching our children. You might think this is bad behavior: http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/eibessential/illustrating_absurdity/clubgitmo.guest.html But I think it's hilarious.
