I believe a few high flyers like Jim Mellon thought Brexit was a good idea. Our contributions to the EU were crazy given we are the biggest market for those vile German cars. I think the € was a mistake but I didn't vote as I didn't trust the available data.
It is a perfectly legitimate political position to vote against mass immigration which is a globalist\open society foundation\Soros policy to lower wages of working class people. Why are you demonising people who are standing for their jobs/wages/democracy? You can apply for a visa if you want to live in the EU permantly.
Because I'm a globalist everyone should be allowed to live where ever they want. I can apply for a visa doesn't mean I'll get approved.
People who work for a living have decided that globalism lowers their wages or gives their job to the Chinese communists. Luckily the elite globalist view is a minority one and people who do not want to live in the undemocratic new world order can still express their views at the ballot box.
There was never an economic argument for Brexit. As a member of the EU and after nearly 40 years in the organisation we had an enviable society, the fastest growing economy in the G8 and record low unemployment. As for the trade deal, there was always going to be a deal so as to not seriously interrupt EU-UK trade, but it was always going to be a fudge and a compromise. However, the real prize of Brexit is that the UK remains an independent sovereign nation.
Trust me, I'm far from Elite, I think it's the Elite that don't want Globalism! Immigrants only do jobs, Brits won't do for wages much lower than they'll get out of bed for, brits would prefer to be benefit scroungers than the nasty jobs they do, without them doing shit jobs, the good jobs would turn to shit.
It is not just racism that people don't like immigration. The reason is also economic. There is definitely wage suppression involved also house price and rent inflation. The rich elites and landlords love immigration, gives them an endless supply or cheap labour and renters, but is it so good for the poorer majority? And of course the elite establishment aren't going to stop mass immigration even after Brexit.
The impact of modern immigration on the UK's economy has never been agreed by economists. But the UK's EU membership clearly did not drive up unemployment here according to data. However, the belief that EU membership allowed immigration which drove up unemployment is widespread.
It is funny that most people always blame others for the problems. China became big because British ( and all the other) consumers wanted to buy cheap products. Everybody wanted to have more salary, more free time, etc. That resulted in more expensive hourly labor tariffs, resulting in more expensive British products. But the British that wanted more salary, more free time, etc did not understand that the job they did became also more expensive, chasing consumers away (to China and other cheap labor countries) to goods produced abroad. The same is true for all the Western countries. The consumers in the Western world created the demand for Chinese products. They created the problem that they are now angry about. And these same people are now complaining???? Globalism did not lower wages or cut jobs. The consumers did all that. If everybody would refuse products made in China, China would not be so strong economical. Check out home all products you have and watch how many or produced in cheap labor countries. Trade deficit is a good measure to me to see how bad the situation is. A negative trade deficit means (to me) that there is an export of wealth to the country from which we import.
So you get a much inferior trading position to alleviate some people's irrational fears about their sovereignty. Meanwhile, the leaders of the US, UK, and Brazil have been thoroughly exposed for being complete clowns who mismanaged Covid in the worst way possible. Most politicians just aren't very good at large projects and long term thinking. Then they scramble dealing with reality, cost overruns. unforeseen outcomes that impact their constituents and/or the government budget. If they are clowns, it's just worse outcomes.
