I don't think you will have to wait for the next Republican for things to blow up. As far as regulation, Clinton allowed the current thugs (Summers, Rubin) to drop Glass-Steagall. So much for leftists protecting the economy. And the country as a whole is far more left today than it was in the 1980s.
...and it was further to the right in the Seventies than it had been in the Sixties. But that was only the beginning. Ditto now, except in the opposite direction. As for when things blow up, doesn't matter. Under Nixon, the economy tanked twice, and inflation was accelerating when Gerald Ford got handed the hot potato and did what little he could with the mess he got handed. If you had asked anyone in 1974 if we were coming into a quarter century of Republican dominance in the White House, they would have said, emphatically, no. By 1980, everything had changed.
