And no, self-employed are not counted by the Government unless the self employed report themselves. The fact is that most of the unemployed seeking work have long been excluded from the labor pool. Many of them become self-employed out of desperation. The thousands upon thousands of people recently laid off by the banks & mortgage businesses will soon be labeled as "discouraged workers" by the Department of Labor, as they will not be able to find a new job in 6 months.
