BTW I came from Hong Kong, but i know a lot of chinese from mainland. Most of them think they are the best, and china will lead the world in the coming decade. You are the only one from china that trashed the chinese higher education system.
I, unfortunately, came from a Chinese university and I, fortunately, earned a PhD here in the US. The fact that so many Chinese students come here for PhD degrees does not mean the Chinese higher education system is good. It means the opposite. Original thinking is constantly suppressed in Chinese universities and most people became the Party's good sons and daughters. Those who are able to retain some of their creativity choose to leave the country, and when they come to the US, they shine. They started to create and produce quality research. This exactly proves the point that a good political system and an open, transparent atmosphere is the key to sustained economic growth. Not high schoolers' math and science abilities.
Interesting question indeed from a Chinese. What have they created? I guess, compass, gun powder, rowing, ... what else? More recently they discovered a new family of pnictide high-Tc superconductors. Wall Street outsourced manufacturing to China and elsewhere, now the US ruling elite decided to build a 'post-scientific' society by outsourcing science too. They've got the best money managers, as we learnt recently, so the US in their view should only have the domiciled Wall Streeters, corporate apparatchiks and Latino gargabe collectors and gardeners. 'Defence' and defence-related science should also be outsourced - it is done by Chinese, Russians and Indians here anyways. Quite to the contrary to this idyllic picture, I see it the way Jim Rogers does: streeters, corp. nomenklaltura and their kids will be raising rice in the Central valley to feed prosperous mainland Chinese. Not this Fall, but sooner rather than later.
Its funny how people will take a source blindly without checking it. I happen to concentrate on the area of material sciences and the family of the aformentioned superconductors were discovered by Japanese researchers. The Chinese merely found another compound of that family. The "professors" there were probably still basking in their glory and enjoying their newest promotion by the Party. As long as the current political system does not change, China can at best be the manufacturer of everything, which is not a bad thing since all the industrial pollution will be dumped there. Jim Rogers is a fool who got too much Asian fever by banging his 18-year-old Chinese chicks. I don't blame him. I profited a lot by selling FXI back in 2007 on his "great" China bull call in November. Also LOL on "China got the best money managers" and the "gunpowder, etc" stuff.
Another interesting thought. My Chinese colleagues, that by far the most numerous, came to the Valley from Beijing, Shanghai, and other Universities, some got PhD here from Ivy league, some did a postdoc. For all of them the most difficult part was to make it in China -- US part was a `piece of cake'. Why? Leaf through prior posts. US is a giant ponzi scheme feeding on a best talent coming here to work hard and make it eventually. Once they'll shut the door (H1B), the real estate will stop growing indefinitely to provide for easy life for n=2,3,.. generations, and the game will be over. And shut they will, since the country is getting overpopulated (watch e.g. Lou Doebbels' propaganda show on CNN.) BTW, I've noticed that Chinese are taking to space in their own crafts, while US pals ask Russians for a ride.
If this is what the average american silicon valley worker can come up with, then yeah they indeed need to be replaced.
It is amazing for a PHD to make this kind of statement - to diminish the importance of high school math and science when we know that it is those skills acquired in those years that form the very foundation of any further education, which is then the basis for any scientific and technological understanding and advancement. China did not have open and transparent government over the past 30 years, yet it grew at 10% per annum. The chinese leaders have done most things right, whether we like to admit it or not. The foundation to any economy let alone economic growth is stability, stability, and stability. On that foundation, you then build the rule of law, private property, and on that you go on to develop technical knowledge, attract investments, etc. You start by producing simple things because you're just starting to learn, but then as you learn, you produce more sophisticated products, and once you know how to produce those more sophisticated products, you create your own products. This is the recipee that is being used by China. Now, to claim that they were able to achieve 9 objectives out of 10, but are now unable to be "creative" and "invent" and "develop" new products ... is really an absurdity. They can be creative, the russians can, the indians can, and that despite the education systems in their countries. Now here lies the subtlety: if the chinese or the indians invent something, they will be able to produce it at home - they have the educated workforce, plenty. But if the US invent something, can they produce it at home? Or will they not be able to because their future workforce lack science and technological skills...? This is why high school math and science skills CANNOT be diminished as an indicator of future prosperity - that is unless you want to double or triple or quadruple your immigration quota... at which point the US will then just be an extension of Asia.
