Two monitor setup...?

Discussion in 'Hardware' started by bugscoe, Jul 16, 2007.

  1. I have a Dell Dimension 8300 with a Radeon 9800 series video card. It has a DVI and VGA out on the card.

Can I purchase another monitor and hook up to the VGA port without any issues? Or can I buy some sort of splitter and run both monitors off of the single DVI port?

I have one 20" Dell monitor and would like to add another.

    Thanks!

    1. Yes, you can add another monitor and install via the VGA port... The only issue is whether your video card supports the monitor's native resolution. (Many older cards don't support some widescreen resolutions.)

    2. No, you cannot use a "splitter" to run both monitors off of the DVI port.

  3. If your card can handle it, you might need to download the new MS dual screen thang.
Just go to your Windows update site and search for it.

I'm so ADD I can't remember how I found it, but it works great.
I do have a new card, but all it's got is a DVI and a S/VGA outlet.

  5. Thanks for the info guys.

Is there any noticable difference in sharpness between the DVI and VGA ports?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Seems to mostly be determined by the video card... and ATI is one which is more likely than others to have an inferior VGA port in a dualhead.
