Tesla gets Gigafactory up and running

Tesla motors started production of lithium-ion battery cells at its massive new Gigafactory on Wednesday.

For Elon Musk and Tesla Motors, the only way to do anything is “big.”

And that’s what happened Wednesday when its gigantic new Gigafactory became operational east of Reno, Nev.

More than two years after Tesla broke ground on the facility, the $5 billion Gigafactory has begun producing lithium-ion battery cells. The first such cells under the partnership between Tesla and Panasonic have rolled of the Gigafactory for use in Tesla’s Powerwall 2 home energy products. By the second quarter of this year, Tesla expects to the Gigafactory to be cranking out batteries for its Model 3 electric vehicles.

Trump’s impact and other tech predictions for 2017
Tesla said the factory has opened with a footprint of 1.9 million square feet and 4.9 million square feet of operational space over its various floors. And all of that building space is small compared to what Tesla has planned:The company said the Gigafactory is actually less than 30 percent complete, and that it will be the biggest building in the world when finished.
It will be producing batteries like no one else had done before. Tesla said that by 2018, it will build 35 gigawatt-hours a year of lithium-ion cells, or nearly as much as what is produced in the rest of the world combined.

The stakes are high for Tesla. In October, the company reported record quarterly sales, along with its first quarterly profit, and Wall Street will be looking for Tesla to prove earnings can be the rule rather than the exception for the electric carmaker.

Tesla has also set a goal of selling 500,000 Model 3 sedans by 2018. With most of the world’s lithium-ion battery production occurring in Japan, South Korea and China, Tesla believes outside producers just aren’t going to be able to make enough batteries to meet Tesla’s anticipated demand.

And there is also the matter of prices. Even though it is the least-expensive Tesla on the market, with a list price of $35,000, the Model 3 is still out of reach of a significant portion of the car-buying public.

“With the Gigafactory online and ramping up production, our cost of battery cells will significantly decline due to increasing automation and process design,” Tesla said in a company blog post announcing the Gigafactory being operational. “By bringing down the cost of batteries, we can make our products available to more and more people.”

The Gigafactory may also have the added benefit of helping Tesla remain in the good graces of President-elect Donald Trump, who has made adding domestic manufacturing jobs one of the key tenets of his upcoming administration. Tesla’s Musk has joined a strategy group advising Trump, and the company has 2,900 people working at the Gigafactory now, and intends on employing 6,500 at the facility by next year.

Believe it or not, but TSLA still has room to run. And this time it will be stronger.
