  1. Well, this was unexpected. Now you have me microwaving my instant coffee, too. You realize, of course, that I would have bet money in the past against my ever doing so. :D

boil the water, not the coffee....not that it would make much difference...but the lazy step is on boiling the water.

  3. I didn't boil either. I put the mug of cold water and instant coffee in the microwave and brought it to a high temperature without reaching a boil. Talk about expedient!

Never got you to install a VWAP so you still have your uniqueness :)

I used to regularly cook my dinner on the Hilux engine so microwaving water is a big step up for me.

  5. I guess I can no longer rule out the possibility.

I have considered that knowing a couple of real baristas (also coffee dealers) and other really detail obsessed coffee lovers, home made instant or liquid coffee could easily have become their idea of the pinnicle of coffee. It has all the possible process complexity and anal details they love. Except for the need for extreme cold I'm sure they would but I could still see a couple with liquid nitrogen tanks in their kitchens.

  7. Fascinating process. However, the Nescafe Gold Espresso that I bought is spray dried rather than freeze dried, as explained in the Q&A:

In comparing the two processes, it seems that freeze drying is better:

I'll be buying some freeze dried tomorrow, for comparative purposes. If I can't find their Clasico Dark Roast, I'll get their Gold Dark Roast, which I believe is freeze dried:

Speaking of freezing, it was snowing here a short while ago. Not enough for any accumulation, but still. It's May, for gawd's sake!

Yeah I saw something about this and a hot blast of 25c swinging to - 3c in Ireland. Weird.

  9. One more thing about the fresh/instant discussion. There is nothing quite like the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. Supposedly, freeze drying captures the aroma better than does spray drying, so I'll see what's what on the weekend. However, I remember drinking Taster's Choice years ago, which advertised its freeze drying process, and I don't recall it measuring up to the aroma of fresh brewed.

As with everything in life, I suppose, it's a trade-off.

    P.S. Still snowing.

Last bottle of "clasico" I opened smelled odd....I'm guessing they inject some inert gas in there. Tasted fine though. I think what I'm saying is, don't get put off it smells weird.
