Whoops... it doesn’t look like the Supreme Court will be saving Trump on DACA anytime soon and will stay in effect through 2020. https://www.washingtonpost.com/amph...9ff1e2a1_story.html?__twitter_impression=true
I can't see the article but no news there. Was not expected to reach the court this session which goes through june or so.
You can copy and paste paste in private mode of your browser to bypass most newspaper paywalls. Give it a try. Trump was counting on a SCOTUS decision in his favor to give him leverage in broader immigration negotiations, until he decided to try bringing it into this negotiation. Either way, SCOTUS is not accommodating and Trump is even worse off, if that is even possible. "It will be in the United States Supreme Court," Trump said of the DACA case during a Jan. 2 Cabinet meeting. "So if we win that case — and I say this for all to hear — we'll be easily able to make a deal on DACA and the wall as a combination. But until we win that case, they don't want to really talk about DACA."
The senate will reportedly vote on Thursday on two bills. One with clean funding through February 8th and another with Trump’s proposal. That’s progress. Trump should have something by Friday or Saturday. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/22/...own-senate.html#click=https://t.co/YyBPxXwmWy
No. Trump is counting on a decision in his favor but the daca case was not fully on the docket and scheduled to be heard this session so their was little to no expectation that it would be resolved this session so that article does not really make any news. I say "not fully on the docket" because there are always various attempts emergency motions and petitions to have the court bypass the appeals courts and hear the cases directly. It may bat some more of those down but no one had any expectations around them. Why would Trump have offered just a few days ago to bargain away three years of certainty for daca's if he thought the case was going to be settled by the end of june? You could say well because he thought he would lose, but you dont hear any dems either arguing that they should not bargain on daca because it will be settled in their favor by the end of the session.
Yeh. Great. Funding through Feb 8. As I have said a few times, one of the problems in Washington is that there is too much compromise. There is a fight that needs to be had. Let's get on with it. Let the federal employees eat cake pr put pressure on their dem reps, and if drunken tourists fall off the cliff taking selfies at the Grand Canyon, then that's their decision.
Count on republicans to snap defeat from the jaws of victory. Trump should end DACA and tell the courts to try and stop him. Rescinding an executive order is not rule making. It is a political decision that is not subject to judicial review, whatever the courts say. He can do it for any reason whatsoever, including spite. It's a little tough on the illegals who registered under Obama's EO but that's their problem. Obama didn't have the right to repeal the immigration laws any more than he had authority to override tax laws or gun laws.
What Trump has offered is a good deal for the Democrats so they are starting to crack. Another week should do it....
