You think shutting down the government in the middle of the wave of a global pandemic and economic downturn is a good idea?
Yes, in fact it's a fantastic idea considering it is the government that manufactured this crisis. Trump needs to lay this whole thing right where it belongs, congress. Veto the bill and let them override it if they want. He has spent fours years exposing these frauds, let this be the final touch. Any and all ensuing problems are on Congress, including each and every Covid death. Every business closing, every job loss, every person losing their home, every bankruptcy, every suicide, all of it. Congress is responsible, along with corrupt governors and mayors.
There could be merit to that argument in theory. Except Trump has the higher moral ground here (yep, trump and moral in the same sentence). He is threatening to shut it down unless more help is given to those suffering from the pandemic. So the bill has opponents on both sides. Some people think the 600 payments are complete pork and others think it is slap in the face to give people about what Gavin Newsome pays for lunch on a light day- while his family business will rake in a couple more million from the program. Yeh, trump. Moral high ground. I choked on that a bit myself. But he also has the power of a pocket veto where his moral authority gives out. Fucking Lindsey Graham went full, full, George Bush on us. Saying that we needed to have the money in the bill for Pakistan because there are girls there that still cannot leave home without a male or go to school. WTF? That is like Bush when he insisted that we could not leave AFG because muslim men would go back to beating their wives. Keep in mind that this is supposed to be a covid relief bill. One could easily get confused. How bout maybe, we slide some of that Pakistan money over to the food lines in the U.S.A.? Oh, what am I saying? Paksitan is such a great ally. And they are. Just not of this country. Laissez les bon temps rouler. Looks like Trump is going to put on yet another fireworks display before he leaves.
I've actually reached the point that neither Wallet or CaptainObvious' teenager grade sense of fairness or grasp of reality surprises even a tiny tiny bit anymore.
I don’t know if Trump has the moral high ground after abducting his responsibility to Mnuchin, getting a deal done, then turning over the table. He really should have been arm twisting republicans for a while now if he truly wanted to get a larger stimulus payment out. However, politically, this is a great hill to go out on for Trump. I will say that. That $600 is a real insult to a lot of Americans.
This Covid bill is absolute horse shit, just like the first one. I actually agree with Trumps position on this one.
Bingo! The bill needs to be separated from funding immediately. They do this shit time after time, purposely waiting till the last minute and then stuff everything into a funding bill. Oh! we can’t let the government shut down. Everything that is not directly related to Covid and American CITIZENS, needs to be stripped from the bill. It would be nice to know the names of the Congressmen or Senators who authored this crap.
I’m just sitting here waiting for the collective outrage of the forum to realize almost everything that’s wrong with this bill is due to Senate Republicans.
