Rule change would allow Trump to 'cook the books' and hide collapsing economy: report

As part of Donald Trump's administration's purge of federal employees who are believed to not be willing to support his agenda, there is a new move afoot to make it permissible to fire federal financial analysts if their reports don't paint the pretty picture the president demands.

According to a report from the Guardian's Robert Tait, government "number-crunchers" may find themselves out on the street if they submit reports that make the current administration look bad.

That has led to worries that future reports coming out of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) will have been manipulated before they are released to the Federal Reserve and the press.


As Tait wrote, fears of staffers "intentionally subverting presidential directives” could set the stage for the White House to "fire statisticians employed to produce objective data on the economy but whose figures prove politically inconvenient, experts warn."

That, in turn, could lead to efforts by the administration to "cook the books" and deceive the markets and the public.

Donald Trump on Saturday lobbed an apparent threat of litigation at ABC.

Taking to his own social media site, Truth Social, the president asked, "Why doesn’t Chairman Bob Iger do something about ABC Fake News, especially since I just won $16,000,000 based on the Fake and Defamatory reporting of Liddle’ George Slopadopolus."

Trump continued, saying, "He was given warnings, but just couldn’t be restrained by 'management.'"

According to Trump, now ABC is "at it again."

"Now I see they are at it again, and I again give these SleazeBags fair warning!" Trump wrote. "The wonderful country of Qatar, after agreeing to invest more than 1.4 Trillion Dollars in the United States of America, deserves much better than Misleading (Fake!) News. Everyone, including their lawyers, has been told that ABC must not say that Qatar is giving ME a FREE Boeing 747 Airplane, because they are not."

Trump then concluded, "Instead, and as Fake News ABC fully knows and understands, this highly respected country is donating the plane to the United States Air Force/ Defense Department, AND NOT TO ME. By so doing, they are saving our country, and the American Taxpayer, hundreds of millions of dollars. ABC Fake News is one of the WORST."
