There's nothing obsolete about Turkey. It's location is paramount to strategy in the middle east. I don't understand Trump's call to congratulate Erdogan, but I'm betting (hoping) he's thinking big picture with it. Let's not forget that Russia was courting Turkey not too long ago.

I doubt that is the case. It's more likely he is just keeping a door open or recognizes an opportunity. But I cannot say for sure.
I agree. But I'm inclined to think that it's entirely possible he did so without thinking and will later walk it back and explain it away as a calculated move in a "big picture" strategy. Constructing evidence or narrative after the fact is a typical trait of people who shoot from the lip.
