America will need to wait to see if McCarthy's Republican supporters (208 members) who unsuccessfully defended McCarthy to the 8 members who successfully had him ousted for several reasons with one of the reasons that McCarthy supported the ethics committee investigation into Gaetz. The House Ethics Committee was preparing to release a report about Gaetz. The long-awaited report was expected to be released as soon as Friday, those sources said. But with Gaetz’s resignation, it’s uncertain if the information will ever be made public... The committee had been probing allegations that Gaetz may have “engaged in sexual misconduct and illicit drug use, accepted improper gifts, dispensed special privileges and favors to individuals with whom he had a personal relationship, and sought to obstruct government investigations of his conduct.” Gaetz has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, including ever having sex with a minor or paying for sex. https://www.cnn.com/2024/11/13/politics/house-ethics-committee-report-gaetz-investigation/index.html Now we need to wait for the confirmation process for Congress and America to determine if Gaetz will be confirmed as the new AG. The confirmation process will need to do another investigation considering the existing investigation by the House Committee may never be made public due to Gaetz's resignation. A lot of Congressional Republicans (e.g. McCarthy's supporters) do not think Gaetz will be confirmed. In my opinion, those Republicans are signaling that they will not say YEAH to Gaetz during the confirmation process. Now that Gaetz has resigned, does that mean if he's not confirmed as America's new Attorney General...Gaetz is out of Congress and can no longer be investigated??? If so, this would be a sneaky way for Trump to protect Gaetz's ass and Gaetz leaves Congress without being held accountable...mafia boss protecting their own by using a loophole in the political system to prevent further criminal investigations. wrbtrader
If Gaetz is able to clean the mess up, he would have done the job! I think that is the reason, he was put in.
There was no need for Matt Gaetz to resign immediately from the House due to him being proposed for the Attorney General's position. The only factor driving his resignation is the plan to release his ethics report on Friday. With his resignation all work on the ethics investigation typically would come to a halt. However the House Ethics committee may still vote to release the ethics report information internally but not to the public. Many Republicans are still furious at Gaetz for forcing out McCarthy. At this point we all know what the ethics report will show -- Matt Gaetz was paying and diddling minors -- plus all sorts of other illegal and unsavory activity. At minimum I expect the FBI would demand that the ethics report be turned over to them as part of Gaetz's background investigation which means it likely would come up in the Senate confirmation hearings. Which will mean that Gaetz's ploy to bury the ethics report by resigning immediately will not work out for him in regards to stopping the public release of the information.
Let me ask -- why have the other House members proposed for positions in the Trump administration not immediately resigned? Nearly all the states have similar laws on replacing a member who resigns. Hint: Gaetz's resignation is solely due to his desire to bury the ethics report.
Trump's middle finger: Gaetz for attorney general https://www.axios.com/2024/11/13/trump-matt-gaetz-attorney-general President-elect Trump, baffling even his Republican backers, walked out of today's transition-to-power meeting with President Biden and announced he'll nominate Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) as attorney general. This came minutes after Trump named former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard to head the U.S. intelligence community — and just over 20 hours after he picked "Fox & Friends Weekend" co-host Pete Hegseth to run the Pentagon. Why it matters: Trump is taunting his critics with three highly controversial picks for three of the most important jobs in the land. Zoom in: Gaetz, who is under investigation by the House Ethics Committee for sexual misconduct, is a MAGA provocateur and Trump loyalist despised by many of his colleagues. If he's confirmed, will head the Justice Department, which last year decided not bring to charges against him over sex trafficking allegations, Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman, secretly met with Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad in 2017 and blamed the U.S. and NATO for Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Hegseth, a decorated Army veteran, lobbied Trump to pardon U.S. service members accused of war crimes and has argued women should not serve in combat roles. Between the lines: The Gaetz pick is a particular affront to former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who was ousted in a hardliner rebellion engineered by the Florida congressman last year. McCarthy has accused Gaetz of a personal vendetta because of the congressional ethics investigation.
I don't think most of the "analysts" on here get it. ----Trump will likely make some, or all, of his nominations as recess appointments so that we can hit the ground running. Gaetz will not have to go through a confirmation process. This is why he resigned from Congreff early. Also, DeSantis will be able to have the special election prior to inauguration day. There's a plus with this as well in that Gaetz will be out of Congreff where he doesn't play well with others.
