So you have a court case showing that free information is considered a “thing of value” -- it is not.

In summary soliciting free information from a foreign national is not illegal -- it is a first amendment right. A "thing of value" is a physical item or something money was paid for (e.g. paid research).

It also bears emphasis that a solicitation need not be successful in order to be illegal. The law applied here is not about an attempt, inchoate or otherwise, to commit a federal offence—the very solicitation is itself a potential crime.

Just yesterday the excuse was that they went there to discuss adoption issues, now they are arguing that SO WHAT if they went to get something of value for the campaign from a foreigner! It's legal! How the talking points change.

If it was all legal, why lie about it on the security forms? Why not contact the FBI like Al Gore did when something similar happened?
