http://www.azcentral.com/story/news...esident-donald-trump-phoenix-rally/586957001/ Poll: Arizonans oppose Joe Arpaio pardon Half of Arizonans surveyed over the weekend believe that President Donald Trump should not announce a pardon for former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio at a Tuesday rally, compared with 21 percent who said it would be a good move, according to a new poll. Another 29 percent said they weren't sure or didn't know. The poll results, released Monday morning, come amid speculation that Trump will use his Phoenix visit as an occasion to pardon the controversial lawman after his recent criminal-contempt conviction.
Yet another impeachable offense by Trump. Arpaio Pardon Would Show Contempt for Constitution And there would be only one remedy for Trump's disrespect: impeachment. By Noah Feldman 1155 August 23, 2017, 11:57 AM CDT When a sheriff ignores the courts, he becomes a law unto himself. Photographer: Ethan Miller/Getty Images If President Donald Trump pardons Joe Arpaio, as he broadly hinted at during a rally Tuesday in Arizona, it would not be an ordinary exercise of the power -- it would be an impeachable offense. Arpaio, the former sheriff of Arizona’s Maricopa County, was convicted of criminal contempt of court for ignoring the federal judge’s order that he follow the U.S. Constitution in doing his job. For Trump to pardon him would be an assault on the federal judiciary, the Constitution and the rule of law itself. To see why pardoning Arpaio would be so exceptional-- and so bad -- you have to start with the sheriff’s crime. Arpaio wasn’t convicted by a jury after a trial for violating some specific federal statute. Rather, he was convicted by a federal judge on the rather unusual charge of criminal contempt of court... https://www.bloomberg.com/view/arti...o-pardon-would-show-contempt-for-constitution

Phoenix Newspaper Tears Into Former Sheriff Joe Arpaio In Brutal Twitter Thread The Phoenix New Times did not hold back after Trump pardoned the Arizona ex-sheriff. A Phoenix weekly is taking the opportunity to remind people exactly who President Donald Trump just pardoned. Former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who called himself as “America’s toughest sheriff,” was convicted of criminal contempt in July after violating a 2011 court order in a racial profiling case. Arpaio and his office had been ordered not to detain people solely because they thought they might be in the country illegally. Trump pardoned Arpaio, 85, for the contempt charge on Friday. Arpaio’s tenure as sheriff from 1993 through 2016 has received strong criticism from civil rights advocates, largely stemming from his extreme stance on immigration and for overseeing what they say was a cruel treatment of inmates. And few know those controversies better than the Phoenix New Times, an alternative weekly that’s doggedly covered Arpaio for two decades. The night that Trump pardoned him, the Phoenix New Times unleashed an eye-opening Twitter thread reminding readers of some of the grimmest stories of Arpaio and his office. The numerous tweets — which all link to previous Phoenix New Times stories — describe instances like Arpaio calling his state’s own jail a “concentration camp,” jailers breaking the neck of a paraplegic man, the failure of the sheriff’s office to investigate hundreds of sex abuse cases and a botched SWAT raid in which deputies allegedly laughed as a puppy burned to death.
