The YMCA, Local churches, Toastmasters, the Small Business Administration SBA, and Public libraries direct a significant amount of resources towards the disadvantaged in minority communities. While these organizations have improved the lives of some, there is still a massive amount of work to be done. There are too many disfunctional and single parent families that effectively denies many children from being brought up with the wisdom and confidence that could be provided by productive parents. Additionally, I recall a study that concluded children living in fear have a harder time learning things that are not immediately useful in their lives, limiting their effectiveness in the labor pool. The immediate cause for most of these issues is substance abuse and surplus human capital (Labor), especially including those who are able-bodied but not counted in our labor force The underlying cause involves policy - goal mismatches, and the lack of vision among politicians concerning major food, energy, transportation infrastructure, environmental, and other prepardness related projects. It will require a collaboration of many entities including the media not romantizing substance abuse, law enforcement being given increased authority in drug related cases, even at the cost of individual rights (Similar concept to requiring people to wear a mask during a pandemic where the needs of the many require the participation by each individual) because of the amplification effect of problems drug crimes have on the community, and the utilization of various experts that create and compile case studies of successes and failures of intervention and who have significant input on policy decisions. Yes, I know experts have done studies and have made recommodations, but something needed seems missing. Public money going towards churches will likely raise separation of church and state objections. Perhaps a less direct collaboration could work. While it is nice to see Trump willing to help our communities in need, there are qualitative aspects to this issue that need to be addressed. After all, considerable resources have been available in these disadvantaged communities for decades with little overall improvement to show for it. I know, for I’ve lived in said communities most of my years growing up. It goes back to addressing substance abuse and finding productive employment for a large, unused, and seemingly forgotten labor pool. It goes back to understanding in detail, the lives, attitudes, and thought processes that individuals use to make particular decisions when living in a dangerous neighborhood. One thing is for certain, it will require the cooperation of both parties to effect lasting change and hopefully it will be more about helping “We” instead of “Me”.
