National Sheriff's Association Releases Statement on Florida Neighborhood Watch Tragedy

NSA has no information indicating the community has ever even registered with the program.

"The alleged action of a "self-appointed neighborhood watchman" last month in Sanford, FL significantly contradicts the principles of the Neighborhood Watch Program," stated NSA Executive Director Aaron D. Kennard, Sheriff (ret.). "NSA has no information indicating the community where the incident occurred has ever even registered with the NSA Neighborhood Watch program."

“The Neighborhood Watch Program fosters collaboration and cooperation with the community and local law enforcement by encouraging citizens to be aware of what is going on in their communities and contact law enforcement if they suspect something - NOT take the law in their own hands," continued Executive Director Kennard. "The alleged participant ignored everything the Neighborhood Watch Program stands for and it resulted in a young man losing his life. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Trayvon Martin during this terrible time."

Slain teen's friends say he never picked a fight

'Martin's parents kept a close eye on him, but they didn't have to be too strict, since he stayed out of trouble, Collins said. However, he had recently been suspended from school for five days for tardiness, his English teacher, Michelle Kypriss, told the Orlando Sentinel.'

'Martin's father was not happy and grounded the teen for the duration of the suspension.'

'Martin was tall and lanky - only 140 pounds, according to the family's attorney - and his nickname was "Slimm."'

  5. Our school district (upscale suburban district) has in school detention, this consists of either morning, lunch, or after school detentions. In school suspension are common, school work is brought into a study hall class and students spend the day in the same room.

Out of school suspensions, usually 3 days or longer, students are bussed to another school building off campus which primarily is used for suspensions for many school districts.

Pretty much the NY law says students who are suspended must have a tutor or some form of continuing education during suspension.

  6. This should be interesting how this plays out. Obama might lose the Hispanic vote.

School systems in New York suburbs have the advantage that they are usually well-funded by local property tax assessment votes each year for the school district budget. I live in North Carolina, which like many other states in the U.S., there is a state-funded public school system. The schools are chronically underfunded; we do not have the ability to fund the school systems operational expenses via a local vote using our property taxes. Teacher salaries rank at 46th in the nation here. Fortunately I live in one of the few counties in North Carolina which is considered 'good' for education (Wake County near RTP). Good in North Carolina means our test scores barely are above the national averages. The rest of the state is dismal except some areas around major cities like Charlotte.

Florida is similar to North Carolina with state-controlled school funding, but has some measure of local county property tax operational funding mixed in (in some counties only).

We do not have any requirement to educate students who get suspended. They get zeros on all tests, quizzes, and assignments while they are suspended. Many ill-behaved students simply view it as a vacation.

The well-funded public school system that I went to 30+ years ago in Nassau County, Long Island still uses in-school suspensions/detentions. However this is becoming a rarity in most states due to budget constraints.

Following up on the admission yesterday that the local Sanford police spent zero minutes on the Treyvon Martin case beyond the day the shooting occurred, interviewed no further witnesses, took no action, and sent no documents to the DAs office (that's some fine investigating, boys). -- come today's gem

Trayvon Martin in morgue 3 days as 'John Doe' after mom reported him missing

'The family said officers didn’t bother to ask neighbors if they recognized Trayvon, who had been staying with his father who lives in the neighborhood where he was shot.'

'Police reportedly had Trayvon’s cellphone in their possession yet they alledgedly made no attempts to call his friends or family whose numbers could have been retrieved from his phone.'
