Well, I live not far from NYC and know a few cops, but besides that there was a book written by a cop a long time ago where they went to St Louis while chasing a Black Liberation Army member who was a prime suspect in a cop killing. The BLA person had just murdered someone there, or so they suspected. The thing that stuck with me from that book was that when they got there, they found that the St Louis PD hadn't canvassed the neighborhood of the killing for witnesses. They immediately thought they were dealing with a bunch of amateurs.
