I am not familiar with Covel's trading systems he sells and really don't pay attention to systems often. But while trading for a hedge fund yrs ago, the fund mgr I worked with did implement outside strategies/systems offered by others. A few of them were TF strategies, and the results over time were excellent. So IF people are going to purchase a strategy, I would definitely go with a TF one. In the long run, they are the best. Again, I don't know exactly what Covel's strategies are, but being that they are TF, I would give them a look.

As far as Covel's books......I've been trading for19 yrs now in the biz, and have read a lot of the trading books out there. I would put Trend Following right up there with/after the Market Wizards books. Whether or not you agree with TF, the books have a lot of very valuable info about trading in general. Also is "a quick read" which will keep the reader going....not like some of the other trading books out there that put you to sleep by chapter 2. Covel does talk with some of the best out there, making for a great read.

Thanks for the nice words. The vast majority of people enjoy my work, and perhaps learn from it or are reminded by it. Perhaps, I end up saving them some time. I have been fortunate enough to learn from some very bright people who have exposed their psychology, philosophy and techniques to me and I have in turn exposed much of those lessons back to others across 4 books and a film.

On the other hand, the carnival barkers, the con men, the often anonymous lurkers (except for Dr. Star Wars who finally outed himself; props to him for assuming human form beyond Jim Jones inspired mysterious cult leader), are dealing with other issues that have nothing to do with me or trend following.

However, make no mistake about it: polarization does not bother me. It's fun turning the lights on and watching cock roaches race in all directions.

You're welcome. I didn't understand why the doctor guy went after you. I looked at his site. Seems like a bunch of scientists who developed some HFT strategy. Good luck to them......hopefully the SEC doesn't do away with HFT trading, or they will have to work on some other strategy. Curious to what kind of track record they have/if they have AUM and trade, or are they just some company hawking a scalping system for SP's. The latter seems like a very crowded arena.

The fact that their company's stock trades at 12 cents...well......isn't that impressive.

  4. EPrado, if you read the entire conversation between the two you will understand who through the first punch.

I agree that Covel's book ranks right up there with Market Wizards but this is a trading site and there is nothing in them that specifically helps traders. If I want to learn something about trading I want to learn from a trader not an author that doesn't trade.

I also agree that $.12 per share isn't impressive but compare that to what Covel's company trading at?

Covel's book is very similar to Mkt wizards in a lot of ways, so if you feel that those books are must reads/great books, you should feel the same about Trend Following. A lot of his book is excepts taken directly from some very famous/best traders. I don't think TF is a book where Covel is teaching how to trade, he is just taking what the famous TF's have said and explained it in detail.

I hear ya on learning from those who trade, and not those who just teach. I agree......I just think Covel does a great job of getting all of the info from these great traders and putting it all together. At the end of the day, you want to learn from the best..and over a long period of time, the TF's like Dunn and others have proven to be the best.

As far as the doc...don't know much about him except he helped create some trading system. Without performance results or knowing if his firm really even trades (which from the looks of it, they don't...they just sell software) I can't say a whole lot...except his company's stock is some penny stock trading at 12 cents.

  6. Agreed!! This is why I like Covel's books. He can get to the people for their opinions. I find it extremely interesting to read their comments. Learning from the "old timers" is important but from reading this thread and his other threads, he has a real chip on his shoulder regarding answering questions.

Bottom line he is a wonderful author and writer who specializes in interviewing Trend Following traders and investors. This does not make him an expert in Trend Following nor trading, though he purports to be both.

Hedge Funds get clobbered in Aug......

    Dunn ends +10% for Aug.

Where is Surf when you need him :D

Interesting how he goes into hiding as TF's are doing great while the rest of the fund world gets smoked.

  9. You're right about that particular firm, but Aug was a very mixed month for the other trendies.

John Henry's biggest fund was up almost 5%. Some of the other TF's did well.

But compared to the bloodbath some others took (Paulson down 15% in Aug.....avg loss across the board in HF world was -3.5%....which is huge), TF"s did phenomenal.

YTD guys like Dunn are way outperforming others....
