I agree with you. I live in the RTP area; the Duke Lacrosse case was a total media circus - just like this case. We need to let the renewed investigation runs its course.

  6. Holy crap. I didn't realize that. Even though it took them three days to hand over the body? Crazy.
The Sanford PD is lucky my mother-in-law wasn't on their ass; by mid March she would've reduced that entire department to tears. And Zimmerman would've voluntarily put himself in jail: protective custody.

Here are some timeline links that outline how the story went viral. The shooting was a small Florida story with only local press until March 9th. The Martin parents started to be in the press on March 9th when they demanded that police release the 911 tapes or make an arrest.

The story started to go viral on March 8th when Kevin Cunningham of Washington, D.C., who it says started the online petition at Change.org demanding that authorities arrest George Zimmerman.

Cunningham, who is white, had read about Martin's death on a listserv for "Men of Howard." That's "an informal, secretive fraternity that he joined while attending the historically black Howard University as a law student," NBC says. On March 8, NBC says, Cunningham went to Change.org to create the online appeal.

After a few days, the petition had 10,000 "signatures." It was then, Cunningham told NBC, that Change.org asked if it could be transferred to the control of Martin's parents. Cunningham said yes.

The parents' emotional appeal seemed to supercharge the petition effort. "On February 26, our son Trayvon Martin was shot and killed as he walked to a family member's home from a convenience store where he had just bought some candy," it begins. "He was only 17 years-old.
