This is what I think of when I hear "trance". I realize though that it does not meet that definition. Alas.
Orbital is not Trance. When they first came out in 1990 they were considered to be Minimal Techno as Rave was the predominant music played at clubs. Rave has been reclassified as Hardcore but it was the dominant music played in the clubs in London, NYC, Chicago, etc. from 1989-1992. Chime was their big early hit in 1990. They had different three 12" releases just on that single alone. Satan & Belfast were good songs from their early EPs as well. I was a DJ from October 1988 until about January 1993 and the dance music evolution was: Rave --> Jungle House --> DnB --> Trance (--> Progressive Trance) In parallel there was Minimal Techno & Goa from 1990 to 1996. Trance ultimately took over in the late 1990s. Hardcore and Happy Hardcore also existed during that time but it was always a niche scene. Rave was almost entirely a British music scene. I think the first song I remember from that scene was the Spice Must Flow! EP from EON (vocal samples from the 1984 film Dune) in 1990 and of course Cubic from 808 State. I believe the only American artist was Moby with his Go! EP in 1991. There were some artists from Belgium & the Netherlands as per usual. Before Rave there were quite a few dance genres from both the US & UK that had limited success like Chicago House, Acid House (started in London but there were Chicago & Detroit artists as well) & Hip House (a mixture of Chicago House, Acid House & Hip Hop). Detroit House was mainly just traditional Techno.
