  4. i have my doubts. Only one diet proven effective for health & longevity and thats the Ornish [veggie] diet plan. It's hard to see what Venuto is selling but whatever it is it is unproven. His site is one big AD. :-/

Interesting re kidney stones... and other comments..

tip: get one of those scales that also has a body fat reading, my wife got one and it helps, since it's the body fat number (not just pounds) that needs reducing ... there's many on amazon.com or at costco ...

  7. Hi Ken...Merry Christmas!

I have been purposely avoiding this "diet thread" since I would be an obvious target for all sorts of "fat jokes" ...and I have tried most of the diets, yada yada.....

Just for fun, when they talk about trading and and the Atkins, what I'm doing this time, in the office....I bought a simple $17.00 grill from WalMart (sans the George Foreman label, much cheaper)..and simply spend 6 minutes with either chicken breasts or pork filets...works great ...I 'cheat' with a little catsup...and I'm good to get back on the ocmputer and don't miss any trading....

My brother's wife brings him low carb food mid day as well (Mine teaches grade school, keeps her kinda busy)...

I will stay on the "modified Atikins" diet for about 3 months, and then switch back to a more standard regimine.....I do toss in a few "Juice man" type drinks to keep the system clean.

All with my Dr's blessing....my chloresterol is perfect (knock on wood), and my BP is 130/85 last checked...(gotta watch it after the heart valve replacement)....

Anyway, just klling time before the big Holiday family event(s).

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Promoters of the popular low-carbohydrate, high-fat Atkins diet are saying that people should limit their intake of saturated fat by cutting back on Atkins staples such as meat, cheese and butter, The New York Times reported on Sunday.

Responding to criticism from scientists that Atkins could lead to heart disease and other health problems, the director of research and education for Atkins Nutritionals, Colette Heimowitz, is telling health professionals that only 20 percent of a dieter's calories should come from saturated fat, the paper said.

Beef, pork, lamb and butter were on the list of "foods you may eat liberally" in diet founder Dr. Robert C. Atkins' plan. Atkins' original 1972 book, "Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution," was contrary to the recommendations of most nutritional experts at the time. It has become increasingly popular since the 1992 publication of his book, "Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution."

Atkins, who died last year, always maintained that people should eat other food besides red meat, but had trouble getting that message out, the paper said.

  9. "They were shocked and more than a little upset to learn that for five years, according to officials of Atkins Nutritionals, the company set up by Dr. Robert C. Atkins to sell Atkins products and promote the diet, the company's nutritionists have been traveling the country, telling health professionals, but not dieters, to eat no more than 20 percent of their calories from saturated fat."

If you go to www.atkins.com they will tell you that they did not say that at all. That the diet remains the same as it has been since 1972. sigh:(
