Over four months on the diet, the participants lost an average of 21.3 pounds, and showed a 6.1% drop in cholesterol, and almost a 40% drop in the level of triglycerides in their blood. In addition, their HDL levels increased by about 7%. In a press release, the researchers also say that their study did not find any of the safety concerns voiced by the American Dietetic Association, such as potentially dangerous effects on liver and kidney function. "In four short months on the Atkins Diet, we were able to confirm scientifically what Dr. Atkins states he has seen in his practice over the past decades. The diet lowers cholesterol and triglycerides and raises HDL... which may represent an entirely new approach to the control and prevention of heart disease," said lead researcher Dr. Eric C. Westman, assistant professor of medicine at North Carolina's Duke University.
Dean Ornish proposes nothing of the sort? I DIRECTLY QUOTED HIM saying that simple carbs should be replaced by complex carbs, which is EXACTLY what the ZONE diets proposes. He warns of insulin spikes which cause calories to get stored as fat. WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT THE ZONE DIET SAYS. I guess you need to reed what your own Dean Ornish says. Let me QUOTE HIM FOR YOU AGAIN Dr Ornish says: I agree with the high protein advocates that it's wise to eat fewer simple carbohydrates, including sugar, white flour, and white rice.....and they get absorbed quickly, causing your blood sugar to zoom up. Your body makes more insulin to lower your blood sugar, but too much insulin also accelerates the conversion of calories into fat. "unlike ZONE diet or Atkins which is primarily based on supposition, conjecture, opinion)." Oh really? Have you READ the zone diet? Have you READ all the studies he posted to support his diet? Do you know what his credientials are? Apparently not. From Longshots other post: "The facts are Dean Ornish's research is the only difinitive proof out there at this" This pretty much guarantees you are wrong. The ONYL definitive proof? Dean Ornish has a monopoly on all true diet knowledge now? LOL. Oh man... your really stretching here. "READ!". I think you need to take your own advice. You weren't even aware of what Dean Ornish has said. And you definitely don't know what Dr Sears has said about the ZONE diet. You also seem unaware of what Dr Atkins proposes as well. What HAVE you read? peace axeman
Long: Im 37 and in awesome shape.....I also would like you to state WHICH heart disease is being reversed by Orgish??? Im open but would his diet reverse, oh, say a tear of the wall? hardening? please show me his proof of reversal of hear disease...i just gave you a duke study that show what atkins did for the heart patients...not just lowering cholesterol but raising the good stuff
Long, you know I like you and I don't mind discussing things but throwing out insults is not called for...lets keep it civil...everybody
You did not give me what I asked for. That shows only that weight loss can occur from Atkin's diet, and that associated with the weight loss were improvement in some of the lipid profiles in some of the subjects. This is to be expected from weight loss in general. This effect cannot be attributed specifically to Atkin's protocol. Improvement in lipid profiles is generally associated with weight loss. Do not confuse what you have presented with proof of efficacy in reversing or preventing heart disease. This extrapolation can not reasonably be made at this time. However, a question arises: What happens to lipid profile when weight stabilizes and one enters "maintenance phase" of Atkins? Hmmmm.. no one knows but Dean Ornish provides reasonable clues.. On the other hand Dean Ornish protocol demonstrates unequivocally long term reversal and prevention of heart disease. That is proof. So which is the better bet?
OK, let's see a great Zone Diet study demonstrating something absolutely remarkable. Astonish us ... (Must be published research!) ps You don't have a clue as to Dean Ornish, but we'll let this go for now.
Your not reading the study.......you claim that the heart benefits can be expected from any weight loss....but DUKE U found that was not the case...ATKINS outperformed the low fat diet in lowering cholesterol and raised what good stuff, which the other diet did nto do...i think you should really read up on it...its amazing what is happening......but I don;t see where heart disease is definitively proven to be reversed by any diet, although by this studies findings, it can be said that people with high cholesterol and clogged arteries will benefit from atkins but i don'tconsider that a real heart disease, more of a condition brought about from years of bread, pasta and ice cream....what disease did it reverse??
I'm trying .. but you're making it very difficult OK, Lets sum this up.. What I need from you people are two things. An Atkin's study showing something wonderful (and unique). A Zone Diet study showing something absolutely remarkable. I am waiting...
http://www.mycustompak.com/healthNotes/Diet/Dean_Ornish_Diet.htm the 'heart disease is "angina" and hardening of the arteries form cholesterol.....again, this is fine....but please...thie sis not the reversal of a 'disease' nad DUKE has shown that ATKINS will do this by raising the good cholesterol while lowering the bad...On a side note i find this ' miracle' diet interesting.....no meat, no milk, no cooking oils,.....boy this will be easy for America to follow!! LOL..but its worth reviewing.. EDIT: On a side note....this diet has been scientifically proven to ,,,,,,,,,...where is the study ? like Duke did?? did they actually do a study of 50 mean and women or are they basing this off of outdated dietary principals?
