Trading while trying to lose weight on Atkins

  1. Yep, there is a good info on acidity on plainherb.com/ph.htm

If needed, you can adjust your body alkalinity by crushing asian coral (from aquaristic store ) and keepin powder under your tongue or if not availlable use sodium bicarbonate 5 times a day. Start with the 1/10 of a teaspoon for each dose and adjust acording your test results.

welo... have you baked much yourself? My wife makes some tasty bread. After the induction stage she's going to try some of the low-carb flour recipes.

re: Atkins sweets on sale? Fred Meyer has 'em on sale currently, $1.99 from $2.50. Haven't tried the bars yet. Did try the peanut butter cups, 3 cups at $1.50 a pop (on sale, I think). I thought they were ok. (Chinook, I'm down in Corvallis... there's Trader Joes in Eugene, I think.)

My wife made something with that fake sugar stuff. Don't know that I care to eat it. I'd just as soon have the real stuff and pay the price, or less of it. We'll see. I'm not planning on being on Atkins forever, but using it to shed some pounds, I'm already more aware of foods now. It might be easier for me to stop at one piece of nice bread now, with dinner. I dunno. We'll see.

I do so loves pasta, with good bread.

Actually, the problem is not so much the slice of bread as the production of insulin. If you're going to eat enough carbs to produce the insulin, you may as well have a carbo pigfest.

It really is easier to just give up the carbs, lose the weight, and re-introduce the carbs until you begin to put on weight again. Otherwise, you'll spend far longer trying to lose the weight and will be much less likely to stay with it.

That's basically the plan. I'm not going off for another week, and only then because I'll be on vacation. When I go hiking and camping, I usually loose weight because I'm so much more active than normal.

I'm 36. I've never been on a diet before. This is the first. The whole experience is making me think more about what I put in my body. Not that I've ever abused it, besides a couple of parties in college where I... umm, nevermind. Anyway, because of the diet, I do think it will be easier for me to stop with smaller portions. I've long realized that's a big issue for me.

I'm a miser with money, but love a second helping of food.

Yep - I'm known to tinker around in the kitchen every now and then. Especially since being on this diet I've had to get creative, because there are very few things you can just grab and eat. Years ago I actually considered becoming a professional chef, right up until I decided I'd hate it if I didn't keep it as a hobby (and the truth is, I just don't love food enough to maintain the passion it requires to be an exceptional chef).

I experimented with my bread recipe idea yesterday and the initial results are ... well ... it flopped :). I'm absolutely convinced this is possible though, and have already been on the phone with a supplier who can get me the stuff I need in bulk at wholesale prices. Am rethinking the investor route though, at least long term. I'd much rather walk into Subway corporate and sell them the recipe for a million or so :D. Don't worry - I have a plan.

As far as the Atkins power bars though: Yes, they are pretty good but I'm reserving the right to be suspicious about them. My wife buys them and it says right on the label they are 20+g of carbs "but you only count 2g due to dietary fiber blah blah." Sounds a little too much like rationalization to me, even though I grasp the science behind it. In my book 21g is 21g, period.

The only low-carb bars I eat are from Biochem. A flat three grams of carbs per bar. They only come in three flavors that I've found, but like I said before: Convinced as I am about the effectivenenss of this diet, to me it is very much an interim fix.

  7. I know I should by the book and learn the Induction stage.....etc. But "my" induction stage is just to drink 3 Atkins shakes at 8:00, 11:00 and 14:00...then eat huge at 17:00. Snack in the evening, and staying away from the traditional breads and baked goods. I find myself craving stuff at night....but its getting better, I am on day three.

No, I will not use test strips.

I am sorry to share this with you......but I just used the toilet and had to flush it twice...there must be fiber in these drinks.

Anyways.....Between the drinks....I drink huge quanities of Lemon Water(distilled)...this helps fill my belly to make me full.

I feel great.....leave me alone Guru's Its a miracle I lasted this long.....I have not weighed myself and will not......I have no headaches....and I will not quit coffee.....THE FACT IS I AM CHANGING MY LIFESTYLE AND GETTING INTO THE HABIT OF NOT EATING SOLID FOOD UNTIL 17:00.

    I feel great,

  8. I've got a funny feeling those 'bars' (whatever is in them) may be more of a health hazard than smoking and drinking

  9. My beer drinking is increasing in the evenings as a side effect of this diet.

I just don't like power bars. It's not that they make me ill, it's more like...

Somethin' jest ain't right about them thar power bars.

They don't taste that good, and they fill me up too much. I don't like the concentration. I don't like those energy drinks either. They just don't sit in my stomach well. When I work out, it's pretty vigorous, but I never thought too much about carbo loading. Granted, I'm no endurance athlete. I'll play ball for a couple of hours.

I am however, looking into the carbs and exercise. When I go off the induction stage of atkins, maybe I'll look at having my carbs before my exercise. Anyone do that? I play indoor soccer (one hour, pretty intense). Basketball (two hours, varied). And now Bikram Yoga, (1 1/2 hour in a 90 degree room, quite taxing).

Do you carb load the night before a work out? The meal before the workout? Or is it more for endurance events, where you'd carb load a week prior to running a marathon, or the Tour de France? Anyone know?

Oh, by the way, first definite sign I've lost some weight today, I'm down about 5 pounds.
