  4. No, no FP, the crust is the problem, too many carbs--> produces insulin, etc.

My wife and I started doing Atkins a few weeks ago and the results are noticeable, to say the least. I generally balk at diets of any sort on principle because I have been in superior physical shape my entire adult life, and the fact is, all you need to do is something to get your heart rate above 150 for 5 minutes a day and you can eat anything you want while burning calories in your sleep.

Even so, several years ago I suffered a severe energy that planted me in front of the screen all this time, and it catches up to you. I'm about back to the point where I can exercise the way I want to again, but at age 37 a whole lot of sitting for extended periods of time just doesn't do you any favors.

All I know is, for a variety of reasons, Atkins works. Prior to using it I only ate once a day and was still gaining weight. Carbs are all hidden sugar (1 medium potato = 1/4c of processed sugar), and when one slice of whole grain bread constitutes your entire Atkins induction carbs intake for a day, you pay a lot more attention to it.

I had the headaches for awhile too, but I think they were mostly because I dumped my quadruple espresso with its corresponding sugar injection every morning. After several days they stopped.

What has sucked though, is with a veg diet there really aren't a whole lot of things you can eat on Atkins. Basically means my protein intake consists entirely of eggs and tofu. Good thing I make a mean omelet. :D

Don't get me wrong though: Well as the diet works my bottom line goal is to build up to an adequate enough exercise level again to get off this infernal diet. Sure it works, but it's nowhere close to fun. :(

For me I find that general physical health is dependent upon excercise. As for the aerobic/weight-training discussion, in my opinion both are required.

Weight training increases your muscle mass. Muscle at rest consumes energy on it's own. This increases your metabolism which allows a higher caloric intake without putting additional fat. Weight training requires a certain level of protein intake otherwise your body will start cannibalizing itself (you can tell this because you will smell extremely bad - like urea).

You want to also do some aerobic exercise. However, if you plan to use aerobic exercise to reduce fat. You'll need to exercise at a level where having conversation with someone is possible, but difficult (this is approximately where your training heart rate should be, it naturally increases as you become more fit). However, you don't really start receiving aerobic training benefits for weight loss until you've been at your training heart rate for approximately 20 minutes.

You'll need to consume carbohydrates for running so that it can be converted into glycogen while you sleep (you'll also need this while you weight train, otherwise you'll always feel like complete shit all the time). After the ATP is converted to ADP releasing energy, the mitochrondria will use glycogen to regenerate ATP. Pick up your kids biology book and look up Krebs Cycle. After you've been running for a while, your glycogen stores will be used up and it'll switch to a different metabolic pathway (Ketosis) which uses fat instead, but this processes takes a while and is triggered by the low levels of glycogen in muscle fiber tissue.

I'm not a microbiologist or anything, so some of my stuff may not be completely accurate. As for the Atkin's diet, I think that the diet places you in a permanent state of keytosis, but they keytones are processed by your liver and are quite toxic. Keytones are also released in deep muscle massages (i remember that for some reason). So drink water to get that shit out of your system.

It's important to drink a copious amount of water anyway. I drink close to quart every other hour. This maybe overkill, but if my pee smells really bad and isn't clear I know I haven't been drinking enough.

In any case, I have a pretty simple regimen:

    (1) Wake up 530, run 5 miles.
    (3) 7am - 5pm do the make a living thing
    (4) 6 - 6:30 - weights (one day - aductor muscles - muscles which pull things toward your body, the other day - extensor muscles - muscles which push things away from your body) - no need to go nuts and feel sore the next day, just enough where you feel that your muscles are swollen with blood.

I pretty much eat whatever my body tells me to eat. Having a strong workout routine will generally tell your body what to consume. I try to eat often (which steers me away from overly greasy ass foods). You'll find that greasy foods tend to screw up your run, and that a lack of protein tends make you sore. The key is balance.
