Trading needs the same "revolution" that martial arts went through 15 years ago

oh jeez this is a dangerous post....

first of all, you gotta understand the best knife technique IMO is actually the ice pick grip with sharp edge out, because you can palm the grip of the knife and hide the blade behind your wrist. Basically the person on the other end has no idea you even have a knife until they are getting cut to pieces, that is really the best combat use of a knife (concealing it to the last moment possible).

so to summarize, if you are fighting anyone who has some knife skill, you are 99% dead.

if you are cocky about martial arts, you may actually be 100% dead, as you may misinterpret your opponent with a lame hanging right arm (or lowered right arm) as some sort of idiot that is leaving themselves open to an asskicking (when in fact there is a blade palmed there).

Anyways to summarize, a knife doesn't get maybe even 1/20th the respect it deserves.

As for guns, you actually have a much better chance of a disarm than the knife *if* the idiot holding the gun lets you get right close in with them. Personally I wouldn't try it myself, but I have seen 2 separate instances where people with guns drawn got their ass handed to them by an unarmed person (real life).

  2. São Paulo is one of the largest cities in the world - 24 million people living in the SP area. Of course it has massive crime, and corruption is rampant - exacerbating the problem. Rio de Janeiro is truly a cesspool of crime, like Mexico City - complete lawlessness and you can be killed or mugged just as much by a cop as a thug. Recife is the second worst city of Brazil in my view, third on the list of crime in Brazil.

You can very quickly and effectively disable any opponent with a strong scratch of your thumbnails on your opponents eyes - no matter how strong and skilled they are.

    bjjtrader,
fighting styles matter in competitions. Elsewhere it's almost all the personality and character of the person. Being street-smart doesn't help anyone in the ring, but on the street.

Survival means avoiding risk, and managing your worth. It does not involve being able to disarm attackers or forms of Darwinism.
Being able to fight matters in sports, bar/street brawls and security/defense related professions.
Otherwise, you are being much smarter taking care of your family and moving somewhere safe.

  4. You dont have a choice. 90% of fights go to the ground, and thats not just Gracie marketing. Go review 100 street fight videos and you will see 9/10 hit the ground.

If you dont know how to fight on the ground, you dont know how to fight, its as simple as that.

  5. On a bad day? Try most days.

Ill say it again, no system has ever proven it works well against knives, ever. Its MA mythology.

Go luck up the stats on knife encounters. Well over 90% of the time, the person who gets stabbed doesnt know a knife was involved until the encounter is well over.

You cant block what you never see.

  6. Wrist/hand/finger manipulations also work just as well/better on the ground... Eye-gouging also works well on the ground.

  7. Good post. A knife is about 3X more likely to kill you than a gun according to ER statistics.

There was an interesting experiment done with cops. They were part of a simulation to see how they would react to a surprise attack from someone they were talking to.

99% of them failed to realize they were cut multipel times before the encounter was over and these were trained officers who are supposed to recognize and see weapons better than the avg joe.

    knife = your dead

    No MA will prepare you.

  9. I had a guy come up behind me with a garrote once. I actually knew he was back there and made the right move by getting a finger tip under the wire just as it closed on my neck without thinking. That enabled me to get my other hand under the wire and get the guy off me. Later I was taking some lessons and the master there was talking about Japanese Sword students that learned to defend against the unseen attack. We were laughing because I had already been there /done that.. I just had such an attack ridden life that I developed that sixth sense somewhat, the sword masters can react to an unseen attack and make the right move to defend without a thought...

I've been in a trade before and alarms went off in my head so I got out at the very top print for the day...

Regarding the knife attack scenario, I've always thought I would probably want to ignore the knife for a moment and side thrust kick the attacker in the stomach, that allows you to lean away from the attack and hit the guy at the same time......

  10. Yeah, it works best for the grappler who is in the dominant position and is an expert in controlling your limbs.

If you think any of these dirty techniques will save you from a grappler, I have bad news for you. It can be MORE dangerous to open that door and escalate like that.

On the ground, if someone were to try any of these techniques on me:

    1) they would fail miserably
    2) id return the favor 10x worse
