"Unnecessary" is simply your opinion borne out of expertise. I assume you'll agree that you're not THE last word on the subject. What is "unnecessary" about doobs' build? I've found that cost is proportional to reliability. You guys geek-out over the minutiae as though some product arbitrage saving $60 is worthwhile. Sure, it's an application of your expertise and I don't fault you for that. A $600 Dell POS with a 250w PSU will do the job, but for how long?
You're welcome to overpay for anything you buy computers, cars, houses, investments just not how I choose to do my thinking or make my decisions
not always... that is the same argument Scataphagos had about mobo with 2 x16 slots without understanding the technology behind how that takes place... I can tell you this.. from all my years of experience there is such a thing as crappy quality that is dirt cheap, but there is also crappy quality that is expensive that hides behind name recognition... many times, a higher cost is derived from the premium implied in the brand name... nothing else... that is not to say there is tech that costs more from which you derive greater reliability and value... case in point i5/i7 vs. E3/5... but those differences are more due to functionality which drives reliability within the product line than anything else...
what do you mean, "I am not the last word"... you damn skippy I am! I am all mighty and knowing damn it! of course, I am not... but you can not argue that there are needs and then there are wants... I dont nickel and dime... to be honest, I am the guy who replaces his computers yearly... my budget for "technology" is around $5K a year or so... though lately I havent chased any tech... but I am also the guy who doesnt seem value in overspending when not needed ... you go with quoting specs... and refer for a 250W PSU on a dell... but a 500W PSU on a system that draws half of that is inefficient, that PS is not performing at their rated efficiency ... so any MFR will place only the PSU for which their system is design... well... I am not a fan of dell... to me, they are in fact a POS in some of their product lines (servers and laptops specially)... but for others, they are decent... the PSU size has nothing to do with quality, only with how much junk you can put inside...
sadly, I worked on those... I hated them... I prefered their replacement... 15K/25K... I had a farm of those supporting transactional and warehouse systems... eventually replaced them with M5K and M8K... I havent touched big iron in ages... I do miss being able to DR SB/PSB's in an out adding capacity in the fly to address production volume increases... those were fun systems... anyhow, I am nostalgic now..
What am I overpaying for? I made 100% in the first half of 2012 on 7-figures (run posted on ET); and 160% on the year. Did I overpay for my investments? You're talking completely out of your ass. Who's overpaying for what? What has your massive IT expertise done for your trading? Look up; this is "elitetrader" not tomshardware or IT Weekly.
