I don't have it in the same room, but I would say the Mac is a bit faster and def quieter. I should run benchmarks. The FirePro 600 is a six-monitor card that runs $500 at newegg and can drop into the INTC server board from Puget. That 12-core Xeon rig is the way to go. Gotta pay to play. I would go MacPro in a heartbeat, but they gimped excel on the mac.
Thanks. It comes down to this: i7-39xxk or dual Xeon E5-2620s. I spoke with Puget today, the salesman I spoke with didn't think I would notice the difference, so he recommended the i7. But I am inclined to go Xeon anyway. Other than the CPU, I am pretty sure I am going to go with 2x AMD FirePro 2460 video cards, Intel 520 ssd, 32 gb ram.
In single-threaded applications, you'll be far better with a i7-39xxK. If you truly have the use for 24 cores (hence the 2 x XEON), then most likely 32GB RAM won't be enough (even 64GB would be somewhat small).
I agree with your statement about single thread performance and the 07-39xxK... specially because you can overclock it easily to 4.5GHz-4.7GHz with water.. and stable.. but I havent seen a 12 core Xeon yet... last I recall, we were up to 10 cores shipping... I will pressume you mean threads... which is the only thing that would make sense... also, the newer E5's will have 8 Cores and will compete in clock speed with the i7 above... but we are talking spending a pretty penny now... also, memory is directly correlated to the application profile... and considering very little is known about what that profile is like... Goal? The guy wants a high end nice trade station and isn't sure if he wants a server build or a PC gammer style build... the goal is to figure out which is a better value as a "trade station". I think a server build is more appropriate myself... but even then my preferences are different then others...

you are not alone in that preference... a server build is more adequate and less costly... but everyone likes to have 8 screens and bragging right with toys... just like a car... rather than to focus on requirements most tend to focus on what looks good... but again, without knowing the real application profile...
