  1. If you live near the coast, get in the water.

Me at my local spot near San Fran:

Lots of fun and keeps you in good shape. Always lots of competition at the quality breaks but more often than not its against yourself...

Got more done today but had to stop after tearing an o-ring and losing a corner seal spring.

  5. I have a friend who after maligning pilots as ego maniacs for many years, finally became one himself. He loves it and the Glasair is the homebuilt he keeps saying we should build. I want to start simple and cheaper with a Sonex. Only a 2 seater, but that's fine and you can put one together for under $30,000, engine and all. Also for me the factory is only 1.5 hours away. They are actually working on a jet version currently. My buddy has it made for the time being. The place he rents from is charging $20/hour dry for a 172 or a cherokee. The airport 20 miles from the one he flies out of has fuel for around $3.5/gal. So depending how he flies he runs ~$50 an hour. Or a 152 for buring holes and practice for about $32 an hour. The 2 closest to me are currently renting 172's for $86 and $99 per hour wet. When I picked up my multiengine I paid $110 an hour wet for a Duchess. It was at $200 an hour a year or two ago, and then they sold because no one was renting it. Wish I had bought it.

I used to do Amateur Radio but can't at the current address. I write letters to a girlfriend a lot. I ditched the car and walk for all my shopping and errands, that is almost a hobby in itself really, I did about four miles today and dropped 20 pounds in three months.

A good friend back in the day said he met a lot of VIP's that flew model airplanes! R/C Helicopters have got to be fun.

Some certainly are but not all.
Me too, I had a General class license. I could just barely do code fast enough for the Extra class but failed my first attempt at the Advanced written and never tried again. We had a Yaesu multi-mode radio, I think it was around $650 new. A small fortune back then.

    Thanks.
You know those things don't build themselves and of course we're not getting any younger.

I wished I'd started my project 20 years ago.

Some of the drive shaft calculations

Some of today's handy work. The engine to drive shaft flange.
The one on the left is finished except for the shaft hole and bolt holes.
The one on the right is still rough. The two will be glued together together with dowels and epoxy to form a single piece. The black walnut boards below are the stock used for the flanges.

  10. Don't skimp on the helmet. Look at what that did to some of the folks here at ET in P&R.
