Trader P/L 2012

Discussion in 'Journals' started by d08, Jan 3, 2012.

  1. Dude, reread my post. I specifically said I don't know what you're doing and am in no way saying it's the right/wrong way to report PL.

The poster asked why some people would incorporate unrealized p/l in the net calculation and I said there were reasons to do it and reasons not to do it. There's not much sense debating accounting, more than one way to skin a cat.

  2. You can plot your 2012 ytd daily equity curve and post to ET:)
More useful and informative than saying I made or lost $xxx amount today, though you can still include that info.

  3. personally i feel mtm is bs for the non institutional accounts. i am only interested in my earnings and not how other people do it. plus i have no time or interest in posting equity curves or other.
i just want to point out if you work hard enough, money can be made in this business.

So then do you count unrealized losses too? Or is it one of those double standard things.

  9. I only look at MTM numbers personally. sometime it is spooky especially if one is trading stuff with large bid-offer spread since MTM PnL is based on close final print.

For a PnL over a slightly longer period, say weekly or monthly, those noises get smoothed away.

Keep in mind that your margin requirement is based on close price no matter how bad the print looks.

GS wants MTM, while BAC and CITI do not since they have more illiquid debts on their book.
