    https://www.cnbc.com/2020/01/02/trump-just-took-out-the-worlds-biggest-bad-guy-qassim-soleimani.html

Qassim Soleimani has been in control of Iran's Quds Force for more than 20 years. His current greatest hits include helping Bashar al Assad slaughter hundreds of thousands of his own people in the Syrian civil war, stoking the Houthis in Yemen's civil war, and overseeing the killing of hundreds of Iraqi protesters recently demonstrating against Iranian influence in their country.

But most importantly for Americans, Soleimani was behind the deaths of hundreds of American soldiers during the Iraq War. Last year, the U.S. State Department put the number of Americans killed by Iranian proxies in Iraq at 608 since 2003.

Let's set the scene correctly because this sentence makes it seem like this wasn't provoked.

Pro-Iran forces attack a US embassy (an embassy of any country being a universally recognized "safe zone" under all conditions) in Baghdad threatening the lives of Americans who have done nothing wrong except serve at a critical embassy.

America takes the head off the snake with a drone strike.

Seems like justice to me. Iran trying to be a relevant military superpower is comedy gold. Great start to 2020. Keep shit talking Iran, I'm sure this will end well for you. It's not like your neighbor (an actual military superpower) has been tired of your anti-Semitic bullshit since the 50s.

I edited to make my post more clear - the OP editorialized the counterattack. The difference today is that Saudi Arabia, Israel, and other smaller nations universally despite Iran and their saber rattling bullshit. It's one thing the majority of the ME can agree on. If there was a war, this one would be short and sweet. The situation 20 years ago was far more muddied and way less agreed on. There are far too many nation state actors that hate Iran to let this one go for long (if indeed all the paranoid tin-foil hat wearing people are right).

    EDIT:

I'll go ahead and edit this and say for the record Khamenei is a fucking clown who is going to destroy his country. The people of Iran most likely don't agree with the attack, but Khamenei, a war-mongering sky-god believer, has wanted this for as long as I can remember. Unfortunately, he may get his wish.

We'll see if said allies are willing to go into neighboring territory 4x the size of Iraq over some bullshit we started, with Russian and Chinese interests at play
