Top countries recording crime

  1. I found this to be an interesting stat- Europe seems to be crime ridden.

    Crimes p/ 100,000 people

    1. Iceland
    2. Sweden
    3. UK
    4. Finland
    5. Belgium
    6. Denmark
    7. Netherlands
    8. Canada
    9. Germany
    10. Austria

  2. Now this is funny. You want me to believe that Sweden, Denmark or Austria have more crime than say Afghanistan, Iraq or even the United States. Yet you provide no link to any credible study. That's funny.

As far as 'crime ridden' that depends on your definition of crime. Stealing a pack of chewing gum is a crime as is blowing someone's head off in a car jacking. The difference is one is a petty crime and one is a violent crime. Most people are more concerned with violent crime.

Misrepresenting facts in order to prove your point is weak.

  3. Recorded crime is key. Some countries are more "thorough" at recording or apply different criteria for doing so.

Sweden at number two on your list only sends 4.7 people to prison per 1000 crimes recorded. This is the lowest incarceration rate in Europe I believe. The UK, at number three on your list, sends 12 people to prison per 1000 - the second lowest incarceration rate in Europe.

One perhaps could be inclined to deduce something about the nature of the crimes being recorded from this information. Or perhaps, the conclusion could be that prisons are full or policy is too liberal and hence the inverse relationship between recorder crime and imprisonment. Sooo many conclusions to jump to and not enough time to do it...

Either way, the list and statistics posted is largely meaningless without proper context...but that's probably stating the obvious to most people...except the OP :)

  4. Sorry buddy you have been misinformed.

The statistics come from the economist pocket world in figures 2006 edition.

They are based on total recorded crime per 100,000 including attempted crimes.

The US is 17th behind even Switzerland. Europe accounts for 15 out of the top 20 countries.

I guess the reason for so many US criminals getting caught and being in prison is that they are just too dumb! :)

At least that can be one conclusion from Europe having more crimes reported but American prisoners outpacing the Europians...

  6. If I have been misinformed it's by your 'Top 10 ' list.

Who cares about recorded crime? I care about actual crime. Let's take the crime of rape for example. Rape happens in every country in the world. Rapes are more likely to be reported in developed nations like America, England or Sweden than they are in countries like Sudan, or Cambodia. Do you honestly believe more rapes happen per 100,000 women in Sweden than in Sudan? That's what your list would have one believe.

We could argue this back and forth but if you really believe that Sudan is less 'crime ridden' than Sweden, I encourage you to take your family to Sudan instead of Sweden on your next vacation.

If you honestly believe that the developed nations of western Europe are the most crime ridden places on the planet there is little hope for you.

We all frequent this site because we love trading financial markets and of course want to take as much money out of the markets as we can. The trick to doing this is not taking everything presented to us at face value but rather dissecting the noise and BS from reality and finding out what is really going on.

I think Mark Twain said it best "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics."

  7. I don't believe your numbers. Different countries have different definition of crime (marajuana use for example). Murder per capita is a much more reliable statistics.

  8. This is def a list of countries with the least crime. In no way can Iceland be number one. Plus why are all the countries from Europe? Makes no sense. What a dumb post.
