I second Allen Carr's Easyway. I smoked a pack a day for over a decade, and tried the patch and willpower method to no avail. I finished reading Carr's book 18 years ago and I haven't WANTED a cig since! No willpower necessary, no take it day by day misery. The book causes a paradigm shift in how you think about smoking. Shared the book with two others and they quit as well. When you're ready to address the drinking he has a book for that too. Annie Grace expands on his ideas in a book called This Naked Mind. I'd wish you luck, but you're not going to need it.
