I think the world will pull through this one. The next pandemic would be a disaster that no one can solve.
Ever watch arrhhh tv show Regensis or similar a doctor trying to learn enough before the perfect virus kills us all. Very good, cant find it, name wrong arse.
You were talking about the case fatality rates, they are roughly consistent between the NYC and Wuhan. FWIW, NYC can not enforce the same total lockdown as Wuhan did and we are going to see higher total number of cases. Totalitarian regimes are good at repressing the population, try to institute a total lockdown. PS. Naturally, it makes sense to assume that China is under-reporting the total number of cases (by classifying mildly sick as asymptomatic, for example), but they are also under-reporting the number of deaths. If they are smart in the way they lie, the CFRs and IFRs are going to be close to the global average.
Three words: Declare Martial law. Americans ain’t and will not stay home, they ain’t doing so now even under incremental lockdown steps being taken. Incremental will not work. Shut down everything for 4 to 6 weeks. Close the markets. No trading. No going anywhere. Period. Only sick can be transported by military to a hospital. Food brought to those who have none by the military. The virus will burn out in 4 to 6 weeks.
Only martial law loving people are those that have never lived under one Only communism loving people are those that have never lived under one And so on.
That would truly destroy the economy and the society, as we are probably talking 50-60% decline in GDP. With a self-created depression, the trust in democracy and the free markets will be lost for generations. If the choice is binary, it might be preferable to let the weak and elderly die out and let the society get back to work. The long-term loss of life would probably be higher under the martial law scenario due to decreased longevity.
To the contrary it is precisely what will save the economy and society AND restore trust in the free markets.
Keep in mind this is volpunter who in his various incarnations thinks that we should take care of that Jewish problem as well, and the gays, and even at one point the Italian Americans who apparently run all the short lending in the world.....
