the problem is, shit typically goes down like this: right wing: "a fetus is life, let's ban abortion" left wing: "wait a god damn minute" right wing: "gays are icky, let's ban marriage" left wing: "wait a god damn minute" right wing: "look at all these trans-es, let's ban them from public life" left wing: "wait a god damn minute" vs left wing: "this misinfo/hate speech is getting out of hand, maybe we should moderate it" local court: "gtfo here"
No more online hate speech, violent hate groups, and online child porn for smallfil...good riddance. Also, smallfil keeps forgetting that Elitetrader.com does not allow hate speech and child porn. Ironically, he continues posting here at ET without objecting to Baron's limitations on free speech. Has anyone seen smallfil rant about Baron's posting rules involving bans when someone exercises that type of free speech (racists posts, child porn) ??? By the way, Canada is trying to add the following to the new bill: A requirement that digital platforms conduct risk assessments on products used by Canadians and "act responsibly, including by upholding fundamental rights" to protect users from harm. A special duty to protect children from harm. A regulator for online harm with the power to investigate and audit digital platforms, impose fines and prescribe corrective measures. A provision requiring "an avenue to audit and verify" that digital platforms are meeting their obligations under the act by sharing data with researchers. An online forum for victims affected by platforms' content moderation practices. Owen Charters, president and CEO of BGC Canada (formerly Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada), said the new bill must focus on children and accountability. "Predominantly, what we see is real harms and issues happening for young people," Charters told CBC News. "It's a bill that really needs to take that into account and really hold companies accountable for what they have for a long time said is not their responsibility." Charters said that if this new legislation does not require reported content to be taken down within 24 hours, it should still require that companies identify harmful content and take it down when they can. In comparison to the United States, Republicans/Democrats are going after TikTok for a different reason involving National Security because of Chinese ownership, and they warn that TikTok could be used to influence U.S. public opinion or harness user data to spy on Americans. TikTok is getting ready for a fight on Free Speech protections. https://www.reuters.com/legal/tikto...peech-protections-us-constitution-2024-03-14/ If the United States bans TikTok...Canada most likely will do the same for the same reasons. wrbtrader
You're not wrong, but "left" and "right's" cultural interests seem to remain curiously and frustratingly balanced over time, in that neither side seems to so "take over" that the other side gives up. So, the war continues. Of course technology plays a role. If the medical technology to, for example, change someone's sex didn't exist then much of that battle wouldn't exist. And I'm convinced the other side of technology, pollution, plays a role, too. I have a hunch the action of prevalent PFAS in our environment at large has an estrogenic effect on the hormones of our internal environment. "Sex" ambiguity and falling sperm counts are possible evidence.
Imo, our oligarchs are going after TikTok because of what happened with the meme stocks (remember that millionaire shorter who said, "this is class war!"), and because controlling TikTok is a way to control organizing dissent in general.
I disagree completely. Abortion's gone, laws curbing trans rights all over the place in every state, when was the last time you saw "undocumented" on a headline, 8 yrs? You got dems proposing immigration bills indistinguishable from Trump's at the moment....and on and on. The overton window on who wins "culture wars" is clearly shifting rightwards due to lawfare.
I tend to agree, as you know I come from the left. But I do have to admit that many on the right seem to believe they're "losing everything", too.
"centrist" lib dems and Israel's propaganda arm are getting wrecked there; tho yes, there's twitter levels of misinformation too. Cons also answer to their donors but they want to devalue the platform for the same reason (control of the narrative); Mnuchin has thrown his hat in the bidding pool. Just cross reference the yay votes w/Pro-Israel lobby, it's like 98% https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/13/politics/20240313-congress-tiktok-ban-bill-vote-dg/index.html
