There's something wrong with human nature.

1. Omegapoint, how is that religion of the right evangelicals and the Ayn Rand follower go together? Why? One is god, one is no god.

2. Not so sure I can agree with you on this one, vhehn, although we're usually on the same side of most arguments around here. That's a pretty big generalization. I don't see drug use as necessarily having anything to do with having a weak will. There are plenty of people whose actions prove that they have an iron will, but who also use drugs of all kinds.

I also think that supporting prohibition is about as useless as reasoning with certain members who change their screen names around here. If we know one thing, we know that prohibition simply does not work. It didn't work in the U.S. for alcohol, it doesn't work to control drug use here or in any other country, and in Holland where marijuana use is legal, there is less use per capita than we have here. The idea that we can legislatively prohibit people from using opioids or any other 'drug' to alter their consciousness is pretty far-fetched.

3. You should know obvious bullshit when you see it. Smear-job articles like this take Rand's thoughts and feelings toward Hickman WAY out of context.

What she actually said is this:

"[My hero is] very far from him, of course. The outside of Hickman, but not the inside. Much deeper and much more. A Hickman with a purpose. And without the degeneracy. It is more exact to say that the model is not Hickman, but what Hickman suggested to me."

_____
A quote from your article:

"She (Rand) argues that all selfishness is a moral good, and all altruism is a moral evil, even “moral cannibalism” to use her words. To her, those who aren’t like-minded sociopaths are “parasites” and “lice” and “looters.”

How out of context can you possibly get??? To read Rand's texts and actually come to such a conclusion is taking self-delusion to a whole new level.

Or perhaps you're the deluded one. You have confessed to taking a shitload of drugs.

Anyway, found in another forum discussing the odious Rand-idolizes-Hickman revelation:

"What did she even say [in her novels]???"

"Whatever the reader wants to find - a lot like the Bible :)"

5. i doubt prohibition would stop everyone but i still support it. it would not be like drugs where a tiny bit can be smuggled into a country and still be potent enough to get people high. prohibition would also mandate a halt of the manufacture of alcohol. alcohol is a high volume product.it is heavy and hard to move. it would be tough for a few moonshiners to fill the gap and you are not going to smuggle truckloads in from other countries. it would have an effect.
i have first hand knowledge with drug abuse especially alcohol. there is a lot of it in my extended family. i see first hand the damage and wasted lives it causes.

since i know prohibition is not really going to happen i support the next best thing. lock them up until they mature enough to outgrow their habits or get treatment that sticks.

here is an example of something going on with some kids from my home town that demonstrates the damage that alcohol does. this kids life is ruined. he will do hard time.

7. Sort of flies in the face of the popular notion of Christian charity doesn't it. While the religious are in fact damned generous with their time and money whenever disaster strikes I agree it seems irreconcilable that her solipsistic points of view might get adopted by the decent people from religion. But do they, for the most part? I didn't do the poll. The radical right in their zeal to inflate their numbers and legitimize the perspective would like that to be the accepted view. They use the word parasite the way the queen of hearts uses the phrase "off with his head", as if, if you dont' have an income its because you're not trying. I know someone who heads hr at a mid sized insurance co. and she tells me she gets hundreds of resumes for every position they offer and from the overqualified. My best guess is abortion is what lured christians to the right and a tough love or nothing
outlook.

9. I'm not sure what your deal is, but a few possibilities come to mind:

Ignorance: You're unaware what a massive failure alcohol prohibition was the first time. Tens of thousands of people dying, going permanently blind or suffering brain damage from unsafe moonshine/bathtub gin. Not to mention the endemic corruption and violence that inevitably ensue.

Naivety: You know what happened the first time, but somehow think "this time would be different"

Ivory tower utopianism/idealism: You think the perfect society must always be strived for, no matter the consequences. A dry society looks great to you on paper, so that's what we should do.

Misanthropy/sadism/evil: You know prohibition causes needless mass suffering, and you like it that way.

Personal alcoholism issues You're an incurable alcoholic, and figure that you'd personally benefit from prohibition, since the government could help keep your appetite in check. "If it wasn't so easy to get, maybe I'd quit fucking up my own life by drinking so much."

Perhaps it's a combination of factors listed above, or maybe it's something else entirely. All I know is that when hard-J's like you get to write the laws, horrific misery and suffering are always the result.

Anyway, no drug, not even alcohol, causes the fundamental ills of society. If we're looking for the source of our troubles, we shouldn't test people for drugs, we should test them for stupidity, ignorance, greed and love of power.
