I just read Prop 13. It seems like a tax cut that has caused a housing shortage! I can't move to the Bay area as my business is in the east and Midwest. But I have always wondered what the allure is that it's become so bid. I was in Miami a few weeks ago and I get that - it's just a playground and asset haven for the rich.
Yeah, turns out direct democracy has some unintended consequences. Most of them quirky but Prop 13 has probably caused the most serious real problems. You definitely don't want to have to do the cross-country thing, I'm on the East Coast for the same reason you are. The flight's weren't that bad, it was the constant 3 hour time zone changes that killed me. Some of issue with Silicon Valley is purely geographical. It just can't sprawl out without the traffic issues. Every piece of property has been built on to the point that the neighborhood I lived in back in 2008 was full of houses on 1200' lots that people would buy for $1.5M to immediately tear down and build a new house that almost completely filled the lot. Miami can always build up or west or south, no mountains or bays in the way and not as many pesky environmentalist who like their parks and open space, plus the poor swamps are less cuddly than redwood forests so no-one seems to mind much filling them in for yet another housing subdivision.

There is overly enthusiastic and there is outright fraud. Elon and Elizabeth belong to the later... Elizabeth is more on the psychopathic side, after all she didn't have a working product.
