My prediction, terrorism, aka guerrilla warfare, is a long term problem and not specific to islam (they're the worst though). With overwhelming force from modern armies and a high technology society, that is the only option left - use that very same technology against itself. So, the idea is that you need to have more control of all the levers in society. Al lot are implicit and hidden - taking control of airplanes, throwing junk in the water supply, etc. Anything that magnifies the effects that a small number of people could do... spam and infotech attacks are another more benign example...

EDIT: you can also check out 'uncover mosque' BBC doc, it's on youtube.

If you really want to stop the spread of radical Islam...the focal point is Saudi Arabia.....everything else is a diversion and misinformation. The radical form is the Wahabi style and its a mistake to paint the entire religion and Islam in general as the same. If their entire religion commands them to kill all non Muslims, dont you think there would be huge wars going on everywhere. Its only the Islamic nutballs that go down this path but our media, especially the Glenn Beck style of buffoon, keeps painting the entire religion with the same brush. Sunni, Shia and Wahhabi are different in their interpretations of Islam

An analogy would be to paint caucasian skinhead Christians as representative of the entire Christian population. We cant paint Christianity with a broad brush anymore than we can Islam. Are Branch Davidians the same as Lutherans. Do southern Baptists believe just like Methodists?

However, in order to keep the flames going and to feed the red meat crowd our media obliges, especially the right wing media which trumps up radical Islam as this huge dangerous enemy. An enemy which has no army, navy or airforce of any consequence. An enemy which has made its own culture backward in the 21st century due to its devotion to dogma rather than science or progress. With the fall of the Soviet Union, our military industrial complex needed a new foe. Bin Laden served that up on a platter and now our right wing politicians and media have distorted this threat beyond all proportionality.

To this day, not one person in our media that I can recall has reported on why 19 out of 21 hijackers came from Saudi Arabia and that OBL himself is Saudi. Anyone can connect the dots. We are sleeping with the Royal Family, which the majority of the population dont support. They view the Royals as spoiled elites who have plundered the country and who are propped up by the USA.

If you truly believe that Islam poses that much of a threat, then consider that statistically you have more chance of being hit by lightning than being killed by a terrorist. Thats a statistical fact.

The right wing media.....Helping to keep America scared.....radical Islam, WMD's that didnt exist, bogeyman everywhere and we spend more money on defense than the entire world combined.

  3. I get so sick about hearing about "9/11" when we are guilty of 5-10 such atrocities every year. Since 1950 we (the USA) have killed over 5,000,000 people on this planet with military action. If you add in the number of regimes that we have illegally and immorally destabilized the number gets much bigger. If you consider that we are the world's largest arms producer and largest arms exporter you can pretty much say that WE are responsible for most of the armed conflicts in the last 60 years.

You can add up all deaths caused by "extremists" or revolutionary groups in the past 100 years and it doesn't come close to the damage that we do. Our nation was founded on violence against Indians and Africans, expanded through violence against more Indians and Mexicans and we are continuing our violence to this day.

BTW, poverty is very much the cause of Islamic extremism. In 1986 the average yearly income was $26,000; today it is less than $10,000.

Considering how poorly-run many companies seem to be these days (Bear Sterns/CFC/LEH/Wachovia anyone? How about General Motors?), having the janitor make decisions might well be an improvement.

At least blue-collar types might feel guilty about taking $20 million in severance pay after delivering a piss-poor performance.
