Can't argue your point. Politics, culture, leadership have been circling the drain for quite awhile now. My personal take is that it's more of a generational issue and these things are pretty cyclical...i.e. succeeding generations will typically act in defiance of the "values" held dear to the preceeding generation...

Definitely some of the latter in the mix, yes.

I think the division goes much further back. How long have the strong dominated the weak? How long have the weak been massing and protesting the strong? How many dissenters have had their heads put on spikes? How many of the privileged have had their heads dropped into baskets?

This is correct, further, slaves were sold sometimes as cheaply as for a case of alcohol. Dunno how much alcohol cost back them, but the records exist.
