  3. Aside from your rather loose interpretation of socialism, why would you assume that the two are mutually exclusive? One of the reasons that trading appeals to me is because my income does not in any way depend on the goodwill of others. However, that does not mean that I don't wish to live in a society to which I can contribute and which looks after its own. It is a matter of respecting human dignity. Religious people always refer to something bigger than themselves. Well, perhaps they should look at the society they are part of for starters.

  4. Not to my knowledge. However, it is my understanding that taxes in the US are generally lower than those in Canada. That's not a bad offset.

  5. Well stated............Charity and caring for ones neighbor, looking out for the less fortunate (because most of us fell into the "less fortunate" catagory at sometime, I sure did) is the highest duty one can have outside of family and faith. But this is best done through a loving heart, not by force of law by government.

  7. Maybe so. But if someone really wants to contribute then whether it is done through a "loving heart" or via a responsible elected government should not make that much of a difference, assuming that the funds are well employed. I just get the feeling that some of the loudest "loving hearts" on these boards principally just talk a good talk. Judging by their posts on other topics, I'm inclined to believe they are their own favorite charities. I'm not referring to you, but these characters generally give themselves away in the fullness of time.

  9. Yes but ADJUSTED gross income is a wonderful thing. Tell me I don't have to elaborate?

And I'm still wondering where that Section 1402 is?

  10. Ricter

    Ricter

I'll open one of my own veins here and say that I think the chief problem of voluntary charity is the same as that of communism, and that is, freeriders.
