  3. PLANTS IN NEWS AGAIN!

    Blueberry Benefits

Researchers say blueberries contain a wealth of phytochemicals that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. In addition, animal studies have shown that the polyphenols found in blueberries, anthocyanins, have been shown to increase signaling in brain centers associated with memory as well as improve how the brain gets rid of glucose, all of which may help slow memory decline.

In the study, researchers looked at the effects of drinking wild blueberry juice on memory decline in nine adults in their 70s who were experiencing age-related memory decline problems, such as memory lapses.

The participants drank about two and a half cups each day of blueberry juice made from commercially available frozen wild blueberries for 12 weeks. A comparison group of seven older adults drank a similar amount of placebo non-juice beverage for the same time period.

Researchers conducted memory tests, such as word association and list learning and recall tasks, at the beginning and end of the study.

The results showed that those who drank blueberry juice showed significant improvement on learning and memory tests compared to the placebo group.

  4. BEAST FINALLY IN THE NEWS HOORAY! :D

Consuming 5 energy % from total or animal protein at the expense of 5 energy % from carbohydrates or fat increased diabetes risk.

CONCLUSIONS Diets high in animal protein are associated with an increased diabetes risk. Our findings also suggest a similar association for total protein itself instead of only animal sources. Consumption of energy from protein at the expense of energy from either carbohydrates or fat may similarly increase diabetes risk. This finding indicates that accounting for protein content in dietary recommendations for diabetes prevention may be useful.

  7. I was listening to a science show on the radio yesterday, and a 19-year study conducted in Japan was briefly discussed. The study followed the lives of a very large group of people (I don't recall how many thousands) during that period, starting at ages between mid-40s and mid-50s. The findings showed that those people who ate meat sparingly, one meal every second day, had more autonomy in later life than other groups in the study. Other groups included those who consumed meat daily as well as those who ate no meat at all. Bottom line, some meat helps to maintain muscle mass needed for general autonomy in older age since muscles naturally atrophy with age. This study did not deal with ideals, but rather simply followed a large sample of people who lived their lives as they usually do.

Interpretation of the results may vary, but those were the general conclusions drawn by the people who conducted the study.

  9. That's all I've got. Now you know as much as I do on the matter. The host of the weekly radio show is someone whose knowledge and opinions I respect:
