BB - great analogy. Most often, it's the standing bids/asks which are pulled (i.e. the kicked stone) that allow price to move one direction or the other - particularly in the ES. The difficult part is being able to tell the difference between bids/asks being pulled versus being hit with orders. People complain about all the fake standing orders on the ES DOM making it impossible to read. But when those fake orders are pulled away, that says something.
